Hi Everyone, I recently became a first-time pool owner that has a few issues and the first issue I want to take care of is rinsing/washing my DE filter. My local city website has this to say:
  • DE filter waste should be bagged wet and disposed of in the trash.
  • If DE filter requires rinsing, it should be rinsed to a landscaped area on the pool/spa owner’s property through a filter bag to catch sediment and then dispose of the bag in the trash.
Does anyone know where I can buy a filter bag? I have searched online and can't find a suitable product. Thanks!

Welcome to TFP.

I have a DE separation tank that my backwash line runs into. There is a filter bag in the tank to capture the DE. Then the tank can be opened and the DE disposed of.

To effectively catch waste DE in a filter bag you would have to have a separation tank in your system. I originally had one installed in my system to comply with the local rules, but soon found it to be ineffective. the increased restriction prevented effective backwashing the filter. Now I just be sure most of the DE is backwashed on my own yard and not to flood the street with DE.

I'm wondering if you would "backwash" by pulling the bottom plug on your filter and using something like a big pool net underneath to capture the wet DE to put into the trash. Then if needed, you could completely break down the filter and hose off the grids in your yard.

That sounds tedious, but you would be in compliance with the local ordinances and still be able to use your DE filter without spending $ on a separation tank. After a time or two of doing that you can determine how cumbersome that would be and how quickly you need to start saving for a cartridge filter.
