Hello, I am new to this website and am going to try the SLAM method. My kit has been ordered. I will be out of town for a long weekend so hope to start next week. I have an automatic chlorinator so will keep that full while I am gone. The pool has been green for most of the summer. I had it clear just a few weeks ago but that only last a few days. To get it clear I added 4 bottles of Bioguard Floc and vacuumed to waste. The algae was NOT dead. It was just on the floor of the pool which I vacuumed to waste. This took me at least a week. Since the pool is so green again do you recommend I try to get as much out before I start the SLAM process?

I will post my readings once the test arrives

We don’t recommend using floc again. Or ever really. While it may mechanically remove some of the algae it doesn’t do anything to prevent what remains from proliferating so as you experienced it will just return.
You can certainly vac to waste if you like.
While you wait we recommend adding 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine each day to keep things from getting worse.
The tabs add cya which continuously raise the necessary fc level needed to get ahead, liquid chlorine doesn’t have this effect.
FC/CYA Levels
Look forward to seeing your first results!

Since I will be gone I am not able to SLAM until next week. Using the test strips my CYA is over 100 so I will start draining and refilling each day. Does that sound like a good starting point?

Does that sound like a good starting point?
It does. Just recognize that multiple drains pitches good water with the bad; with each subsequent drain being less effective. You can safely drain down to 12 to 18 inches in the shallow end, paying attention as it gets lower looking for any liner shifting. Stop immediately if it starts pulling or shifting.
Using the test strips my CYA is over 100
If the kits says similar, 90+ is sketchy to read so make a sample of half tap and half pool water, procede with the rest of the test as normal and double the result. 250 is 'over 100' and can drastically raise the amount needed to drain. It's an even exchange with 0 CYA in tap water. To get to 50 from 100, drain half. (Etc etc)

And please excuse my terrible manners. Welcome to TFP !!!!

Another question - I am getting nervous about the liner. I live in a rural area with no access to fill the pool quickly so I will be using a garden hose which I am guessing may take days to fill? Will this affect the liner?

Will this affect the liner?
Not if you leave 12 to 18 inches in the shallow end when you drain. (Keeping an eye on it when it's close to that range).

Turn off the hose for showers, laundry, the dishwasher, etc. The water hammer may loosen up crud in your house pipes that you don't want going in the pool like iron.
