CYA Testing Chemicals Gone Bad?

I have a two-year old testing kit I bought off this site. Been going through way too much bleach lately, so I tested CYA today.

FC was a 4.5
CC was at .5

CYA was at 0 I guess. I filled the tube to the top and could still see the dot.

Am I really out of CYA or did my testing chemicals go bad?

Melamine is pretty stable, a 2 year old batch is almost certainly good. When was the last time you checked your CYA and what was it? It does very slowly degrade, a couple ppm a month usually.

I haven't checked it in at least a year. It was about 30 last time.

Well nothing surprising then, I wouldn't expect a CYA reading since even a small 1 ppm/month loss over that time will put it below the readable limit of the test. You can safely dose to 30 ppm, even if there is a little left you will still be in a usable range.

CYA degrades a little over time, and if you had a lot of rain, it could have dilutedv too

I'd add more, but go slowly. You might still have 10 or 15 remaining and you don't want to overshoot.

I have found when the CYA reagent goes bad it will actually read high.
Anyone else come across this?

High heat will zap the reagent, as with most of them!
