CYA seasonal numbers

So my understanding of CYA is that the pool math recommended range gives you what should be the range of highest efficiency for your FC against the sun/heat. Then does it make sense to run lower CYA in the colder part of the year? Probably save a little money on chlorine to keep a lower FC.

Within reason, the FC usage does not go up with the higher FC required by higher CYA. So if you are at 50 ppm CYA in summer, lowering it to 30 ppm for winter is not necessary, though in many areas it will do that naturally due to slow oxidation of the CYA and/or dilution from rain, snow, etc.

Testing your CYA monthly from spring into fall is necessary as CYA will reduce. Slowly.
