cya question

Hi everyone,

I've just finished a baquacil to bleach conversion and my water has never looked so beautiful.

I changed out the sand yesterday and added 3 lbs. of cya in a sock to get my levels up. I went out this afternoon to check it and the sock is already empty. I thought I read it takes a long time to dissolve so I got kind of worried.

Maybe I just misread. Is it supposed to take a while to dissolve or just a while before it registers your levels?

Don't worry, that's normal. Usually it'll break down into smaller and smaller pieces as it's dissolving and will escape the sock, but still take some time to completely dissolve and show up in your testing. Go ahead and test it either tonight or tomorrow and see what it reads. I usually give it a day or so after it's dissolved out of the stocking.

I am currently starting my conversion. I found Gallon Bottles of CYA at the Pool Store for $27.95.

Is there anywhere else I can find it locally?

some hardware stores and walmarts carry granular cya/stabilzer, but I doubt they carry the liquid kind. you can always check though. the liquid kind is a lot more expensive.

I don't have a problem using granular cya, I just wasn't sure where to find it. I scanned the isle quickly at Walmart, but must have missed it.

Many of the big box stores carry CYA/stabilizer/conditioner in their pool departments, though that does vary somewhat depending on how common swimming pools are in your part of the country.

Hello,

Wal-Mart carries the stabilizer under the name of aquachem in 3lb containers. It is a purple label and says balane+protect on it. You can also get stabilizer at Home Depot. C.heaper at Wal-Mart.

Thanks, just found it at Walmart, but in a different container. It still has a purple label on it. 4lbs. for $13.98!
