CYA over winter

Closed without incident last year. CYA was 70. (I have a SWG) I pumped out about 18" of water and put on my new mesh safety cover. I opened this weekend to a relatively clean pool. We've had a lot of rain and snow the past month and the water was just about up at a proper level. I spent the weekend dialing in the chemicals. The weird part is my CYA, which I expected to be pretty low after the winter, was 60. I measured twice on each of two room temperature samples with fresh reagent. Does this seem normal? The water isn't perfectly clear, but I can easily see the drain at the deep end. I can't imagine that would affect a CYA test, though.

Normal at opening is a broad term for many. Much depends on the conditions at closing, amount of water displaced, and sometimes ... simply occasional scientific anomolies and factors we can never predict. Some oddities are hard to pinpoint. In the end, it's good you have CYA remaining and less effort in that area to worry about.

As for the water itself, adjust and monitor. Consider an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test and/or SLAM Process if it doesn't clear up soon with increased FC. Welcome back to another TFP season. :swim:

Thanks for the reply! OCLT was zero over Saturday and Sunday night. The water is still pretty cold, so I think I'm ahead of the algae. CYA is a little bit voodoo, I think. I'll stop overthinking it and just watch levels.
18" in 34K of water isn't much, CYA/60 sounds about right :)

Just a quick thanks to everyone on this site. We bought a house with a pool in Feb. 2017 and somehow I stumbled across TFP before it was time to open. Never had a pool before. I don't like to think about what I would have done if it weren't for TFP! I had no clue when I started and I've had two summers (going on three) of a perfect pool. There is such a wealth of knowledge here. I feel like I should give back and help others here, but all these really smart people post before I even get a chance. So, yeah. Just, thanks.
