I have a question. One week ago my CYA was 30. I had it as high as 60-70 previously but with splash out and refiling it had dropped down to 30. I added the recommended amount of dry stabilizer per pool math and tested my CYA today again and it still was reading 30. I added it to my pool by spreading it around the deep end and brushing it around every so often for 2 days until it was all dissolved. What would cause the cya to not rise?

How long ago was it all dissolved? It can take 48 hours to register on a test. In the future we recommend the sock method instead of dumping it in - less potential danger to the liner. Put it in an old sock / fine mesh bag and hang it from a pole so that it’s dangling in the stream of a return jet. Squeeze every so often.

It took about 2 days to fully dissolve. And it was put in one week ago. I have an automatic cover on my pool so its difficult to have a sock/mesh bag keeping it near a return jet.

Should be registering then. Potential explanations:

- The CYA reagent somehow got contaminated
- The lighting for the testing isn’t sufficient or alternatively is in direct light instead of strong indirect light
- If you have an autofill and there’s a leak / autofill putting fresh water in

Just some thoughts on potential possibilities....

No auto fill. Didnt think about the lighting. I did it in my kitchen so I just had kitchen lights on above me. What could cause contamination to CYA. I purchased it from hoke depot about 2 months ago. Not sure how long it was on their shelf for though.

I didn’t know HD sold CYA tests. What test kit are you using?

CYA reagent is normally very stable and lasts a long time unless somehow contaminated. Not sure what that means, just something I’ve picked up.

Lighting does matter. You want a very bright area with no direct light on the vial. Outdoor in full sunshine with your back to the sun is best. Too dark and there’s not enough light to catch the CYA bound to the reagent and cloud the water. Direct light can highlight the dot too much.

Oh sorry! I thought you meant the test kit.

CYA is CYA. Maybe it was mispackaged though. See if your TA or CH went up?

My CH and TA have been pretty stable for a month...ill try to redo the test again in different lighting post those results. Won't be able to do that for a couple days though. Wish the tf-100 kits came with more CYA testing solution though😄

well I tested my CYA toay and it went up to 50. I tested it in the same spot i tested last time and outside with the sun to my back and both read pretty much the same.
