Looking at the chart. Min cya level listed is 60 for a swg pool. But my pool has an automatic cover on it most of the time. So I see people recommend about 30 cya. At that level, what should FC be at?

here is a link to the fc/cya chart, click the swg chart,
30cya is not reccommended for swg
i would probably target 3.5fc to 4fc
dont forget to remove cover regularly to let cc burn off

For this time of the year 50 would be the most you'd need and I like the 10% rule which will put you at 5ppm for FC.
That is where I'm at, and just down the road from you. With the auto cover, 50 CYA, and 5ppm churning out of my SWCG, it almost makes the water maintenance boring it is so easy. Remembering to open up the cover to burn off those CCs is important, otherwise, these numbers work great for our climate this time of year.

Thanks man. Are you literally in my neighborhood? I’m going to wait till I get the chlorine balanced, then add a bit more cya. I was going to shoot for about 40.

Anything over CYA 30 is fine for a covered pool with a SWG. I would not stress over the exact level.

that was my plan, but there is no recommended TC level for CYA that low. I was going to shoot for about 40 CYA in the end, and like 4-5 for the TC? working on lowering my TA currently.

30 CYA # 3-4 ppm of FC

- or -

40 CYA # 4-5 ppm of FC

is all the same. Both will work fine for you.

Your PM logs says you have CYA 30 and FC of 4 now.

working on lowering my TA currently.

What are you looking to get your TA down to?

You are doing more work then necessary. Your water chemistry is fine now.

I just added cya this week. It’s about 30 currently I think. My ph and calcium are a bit high overall. Was trying to lower ta a bit to see if the ph stays a little lower for a longer period. Read that in the pool school area. And pool math says my ta is high.

Close! Right down the road in Lockport. This time of year, I do shoot for 50 CYA and 10% Chlorine so run at about 5. The cover is closed more than it is open these days, may have a day or two more before we shut it down for the winter. Will aim for 50 CYA in the early spring as well, then like to get to about 60 by June and its a nice run till the end of the season.

My TA like to sit "higher" than PM recommended levels, around 100 on average, but the pool seems happy at that level and my PH tends to stay in the 7s so I don't even sweat the TA. My TA fill is high so each time we top off its going to drift that way anyway and all other levels remain consistent so if the pool is happy, so am I.

Nice. I had really low cya when I arrived here. I’ve got maybe around 30 now. Been working to balance the pool over the last week or so to tfp recommended levels. I’ve lowered the ta to about 90 and got the ph back at about 7.8 from Fountain use overnight. Unfortunately the pool is warmer then the air a lot this week and I’ve had tons of evaporation. So I’ll need to add water before closing. Which will mess up my numbers! Hopefully not too much.

Do you close your own pool? I have not yet. But I’ve been considering it. Gonna read up about it.

That is one of the few things around my place I do not do. I could if I really wanted to, but for me, the relatively low amount it costs me to have someone who really knows what they are doing, is insured, and does a great job, makes it hard for me to even think about it. I have seen a ton of members here tackle it, but this is one area I will sit on the sidelines for. I do get involved lol! I do prepare the water for its winter nap, do not leave any chemicals to the company who does the close.

I don't even open the pool either haha, but that one would seem the easier of the two. Again, the relatively low cost to have the one who closed it, open it right back up is just appealing to me.

Who do you use? I use derochers in shorewood. But they do all the chemical stuff as well. It comes with the closing. I wouldn’t know what to do anyway.

I'll shoot you a PM with the details. The company I use will do the chemicals if I wanted them to, but they do not know the TFP protocols, or best practices for chemicals at closing (at least in my book) so I'd rather keep that to myself. Took me some time around here to read up on the best practices, but once I got it, the pool has never looked better in its 2 years lol!
