Purchased house with my first ever pool. SWG 30,000 gallons. CYA reading at 7ppm from one store, 5 at another, and 0 on a test strip. Poolmath says to add 18lbs, TFP says to do it through a sock at the returns. Do I just add another (3) socks full everyday for a week to get it up assuming each one takes a day to dissipate? First pool and have read horror stories of too much CYA also both pool stores said ‘oh you have a SWG you can have under 10 CYA it’s fine’ but I don’t trust them.

Hey!! Welcome to TFP!!!

We recommend that you get your own test kit. I don't trust pool stores either (note my name). Here are recommended test kits -->Test Kits Compared

The reason we do this is that pool store testing is notoriously wrong and it is very possible we give you advice based on those tests, that can actually make matters worse. In this case, they say your CYA is low, we say "add away," you get your test kit and it is now out of range high and you have to drain and replace water.

Best to get a test kit, and we can set you straight!!!!

Some inspiration for your eyes -->How Clear is TFP Clear?
