Cya 80 and mustard algae

I am trying hard to learn how to care for my pool without the pool store. I’ve already dealt with copper staining this spring and now it’s mustard algae. I was trying to figure out just how long and what percentage to run my swg to keep my chlorine right. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn in time. I have a cya of 80 and I’m wondering just how high my chlorine needs to be to kill it. I have the Taylor k-2005 salt. The recommended chlorine test kit is coming today. From what I’ve read it’s going to take a lot of liquid chlorine to kill this algae. Would it be best to drain some water first? I see yellow out is not a recommended product.

Most everyone that comes to TFP thinking they have mustard algae, actually don't.

If you do have algae, the first step is SLAM (Shock Level and Maintain) - SLAM - Shock Level and Maintain

Post up a full set of test results once you have the FAS DPD test and the group can help you from there. I bet a good old fashioned SLAM will do you right, but it'll be tricky at CYA 80. You might need to drain and replace a bit of water first, to make the SLAM easier and cheaper.

There are people that are successful with a CYA of 80, but it is hard and will take a lot of chlorine.

Given my experience, it would be best to exchange 25% of your water and get your CYA down to 60. You will likely be more successful.

Since you have a Taylor K2005 test kit, you need to add theTaylor K-1515 (FAS-DPD) test kit to be able to measure FC levels accurately and to SLAM Process. You also need aTatlor K-1766 salt test kit.

It may be more cost effective to just get the TF-Pro Salt.

So, I drained some water and added fresh. My cya is between 50-60. I read somewhere to round up, so 60. FC 8.5, CC0.5, PH7.2, TA70. I used the pool math and it says to add 4 gallons of 10% chlorine to raise chlorine to 24ppm.

GREAT! Slam is a process. You need to follow the process. Print this out, read it three times and follow the process...Link-->SLAM Process

Test and replace FC to 24 as often as you can...until you reach all three criteria to end the SLAM.
