Cooling our pools for those in the deep South and in direct sun

My current Coleman 22x52 is not my first pool back in the 90s I had colonial 22x52 hard wall steel above ground pool.

It sat in direct Sun and sometimes water would get in excess of 90 degrees. Not something you want to relax in on a summer day.

While one day in the dollar store I saw these 16x16x6 Tupperware containers. Sitting right by the ice trays it occurred to me these full of water frozen would make a nice frozen block.

I bought 12 filled with water and froze them. When water reached near 90 degrees I dropped all 12 in the pool, it dropped the temperature almost 10 degr5in about two hours.

Take a look at Skippy's cooling fountain link in my siggy line. We use this to cool our pool down, and if run at night it works even better!

While your idea worked well, kids enjoy the fountain to swim under. It also provides a little pleasant noise.

This is such a timely post. Our pool hit 93 today here in south Florida. Too warm in my opinion. And it's only going to get hotter. I've been googling ever since my first dip today. I came across skippy-like mist fountains online for about $30. Who knew that you would ever need to worry about your pool water being too warm???

I have a pair of these misters installed on two of my returns last summer. Before I installed water temp was going into mid 90s. I live outside Atlanta and air temps were mid to upper 90s. I ran these at night and water temp was about 78 in morning and got up to about 82 by sunset (I had full sun 8:30 am- 6:00 pm). Love these. Trying to figure out a way to make something like these installed over decking so I do not have to take up my returns.

Thanks. Most people seem to say they work. Did you buy them online or make them? I'm skeptical with our constant humidity and lack of overnight lows here in south Florida. But for $60-$70 for two, I am willing to take a chance.

I was very skeptical when I ordered. Figured I would try them out before considering up to 3K for cooler. Pool was not refreshing. I bought 3. Installed 2 to start. Was amazed how well they work. Can drop temp 10 degrees overnight. While not as humid here as you, I don't think its an issue.

Only issues I have with them is that - 1) will get some spay onto decking (especially if windy). Not a big deal. 2) Takes up returns. Even though I can turn under water when not in use, the flow is not the same. 3) Can pop out if I turn my pump up to full speed (figure I will wrap a layer of maybe teflon tape on them.

Grandkids like them when swimming on hot days too.

Thanks for the info. We woke up today with 78 outside temp and 88 pool temp (from 93 yesterday at sunset). Extra humid day. Kicking it down to 80 overnight would help it take longer to climb throughout the day for sure.

With 2 of these I can average about a 10 degree drop on cooler nights. Your pool volume is close to mine. Hope it works as well for you as it does for me.

I will report back in a couple of weeks. When I'm filling the pool from the hose, I should have it at the bottom of the pool vs on the surface, right?

Yes, when you don't want it cooling, or to play in, you can turn under the water.

I had luck cooling my pool by just running my pump at night, and letting the water set during the day.
