Converting to chlorine from PermaSalt

Got a picture of your water now? It’s acting like its filthy, or you have no CYA in the water, or its got a dirty cover on it at night, or some kind of odd testing error. Maybe post up a short video of the test process to rule out the last one.
The last two times I did this FC dropped drastically with CC remaining at essentially right at zero or so.
I’ve studied the test and even had someone follow the directions along with me.

Ok 👍🏻 sounds like your chlorine isn’t degraded.
Let’s go thru the checklist ✅
All ladders/steps out,
Checked weir door & its foam (both sides- take the foam out and clean if needed),
Checked skimmer throat,
No toys in the pool,
Any pool lights? Main drains?
Checked vac for algae?

Also, were you adding algaecides before?
If so, what were the ingredients?

I put the 10ml water in a “washed with pool water” plastic measuring tube. Add two level scoops of R-0870 DPD Powder crystals. Swirl one thousand times to dissolve. lol.
Then when no crystals left I start adding drops and counting them while continuing to swirl around the vial. Writing down the number of drops that equal .5 each until it turns clear. Then when water turns clear I add 5 drops of R-0003 DPD Reagent #3 to the vial. Lately it barely turns any shade of pink. Extremely slight color change to pink that I’ve not added that drop because the water at that point is virtually clear meaning no CC.

If I keep doing this I’ll have to order more tests.

I’ve proof read this four times. And it mirrors the instruction sheet that came with the test.

It’s possible the cya test results are off and I know you guys don’t like pool store stuff but I threw those up just to show that I think my cya tests have been somewhat close.
You’re doing it right. Always good to double check though. One thing is that you dont need to stir the powder until it dissolves. Ideally there are a few grains of powder left when doing the test. How long is that 1000 swirls taking? You should spend no more than 5 seconds on that. Waiting too long to test can make the pink come back again so no idea if theres a similar issue in stirring initially for excessive amounts of time but worth a try.

Algicides have been added over the past month.
Bonnie and Clyde’s Algae pro 60. Poly (oxyyethelene(dimethimino)ethylene dichloride.

NO ALGICIDES HAVE BEEN USED in last 2 weeks.

Leslie’s clear aid. “Clarify Dead Algae and uncloudy your water” No ingredients listed. But it’s so good you’ll win the lottery.
✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅✅ on all the rest.
And no lights. It’s agp.

Only thing inside is water. Foam thingy in skimmer has been soaking in bleach. Sides brushed. Skimmer brushed. Jet taken out and bottle brush used.

I’m just stumped.

Posting cya numbers with pictures of beginning half way and when the dot disappears.
Also I’ll do another fas dpd. It’s been almost four hours since I dosed it up this morning.

Ok so I didn’t know that. I HAVE noticed that the pink will try to come back after many seconds.

Good to know. I’ll be quicker.

CYA test. Filled to 7. Added chem to 14. Shook 3-45 seconds. Added to 100 looked. Added to 90 looked. Added to 80 looked.

Anyways so from dot with nothing added to 100,80,60 then 50. So add ten to the 50 puts me back at about 60.

38 drops fas dpd. 5 second swirl.
So 19ppm Fc
Zero Cc.
CYA we’ll say 60.

So I need my fc up some more. I’ll use pool math.

Which by my last test just now I lost almost 10ppm again. Since 630 this morning dosing by the pool math numbers. That’s 10ppm in 4 hours.
I’ve double checked all the CYA FC chart.
Poolmath entries.
Size
Current/goal numbers
Exact chem I’m using and its percentage.

I don’t have a salt test. The form autofills the salt portion at 1000/1000.

It has seemed to fall short after addition of chlorine. That’s why I went over to the next higher cya-fc chart numbers for SLAM.
Dont do that. Every ppm you go over is just wasted money to the sun. The SLAM level is designed to be good balance between sanitation and wasted chlorine. Stick with the rounded up CYA level you got and dont try and outsmart the process.

If you arent reaching the goal, adding more to actually reach it is ok, but dont waste money keeping it above. Your testing process looks perfect so keep going. Algaecides can eat chlorine so that may be part of whats going on as well. Didnt realize that.

Haven’t added any of the algecide containing products in over 2 weeks. They never seemed to work.
I tried to overshoot. What I did was SLAMmed for a 70 cya at 28ppm instead of an actual SLAM cya of 60 for 24ppm.

If that makes sense. I probably worded my posts in an odd way. Not explaining more gooder. Lol
😆
