Convert a saltwater system back to chlorine

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to all of this. I have an Intex 15x48 pool with an Intex pump and saltwater system. In the last couple years I've noticed rusting on the frame so I'm wanting to convert back to chlorine. Problem is that i'm not sure how to accomplish this. Do I take the saltwater system off the pump? Please any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Randy

Randy,

You are mistaken if you think the saltwater is causing the rust. They all rust over time no matter what. And to make matters worse, even a standard chlorine pool has plenty of salt in it..

But, it is your pool and you can do whatever you want. You will need to drain most of the water if you want to get rid of the salt. Then refill and either remove, or don't turn on, the salt cell.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hi Jim,
The saltwater causing the rust was something a guy at my pool store told me. Maybe I need a new pool store. So if I just set the pump to Filter Pump (FP) then I should be able to run the chlorine tabs in it?

Funny, most all corrosion I have ever seen was caused by tablets. Saw a heater that was completely destroyed in a month due to low pH from running tabs. Never seen a salt pool do that :sneaky:

If you hang around here for much time at all you will see just how little people at the pool stores know. But anyway, like Jim said, if it is the salt in your pool that is causing corrosion (it isn't) then you need to do a complete water change. Just switching to tablets will do nothing, in fact your salt level will begin to rise. When chlorine reacts with something it reduces to chloride, which is salt. An SWG turns that salt back to chlorine so the salt level stays mostly stable, but chlorinating any other way causes the salt level to continuously rise. Bet the pool store guy doesn't know that little tidbit.
