I have a hayward tristar 950 with 2 - 2 1/2 inch inlet and outlet but the plumbing is for 1 1/2 inch. How do I reduce pump inlet and outlet. Would it be easier to size up plumbing to the 2 - 2 1/2inches?.

Put the union on the pump connection then use a reducer fitting to go back down to 1 1/2” pipe.
You could put everything as 2” pipe but I assume you must have 1 1/2” pipe coming up from the ground to feed the pump? Show a photo of your equipment pad.
