A big Hello to All from NJ. Hope you guys are having a great start to this summer.

I have two waterway SLV-56 2HP 240V pumps - one for filter and other for waterfall. That plus other stuff is hooked up and controlled through the Compool 3600 controller. Approx 2 weeks back, I noticed that filter pump is not coming on, the contoller light is on for the pool pump but pump doesnt turn on. All other eqpt hooked up to the controller work fine. I checked with voltage sensor - and it doesnt chirp on filter pump but does so on the waterfall pump.

I suspect something in the controller is not switching on the controller to power up the pump. I have home warranty but they can't find a tech to send out to diagnose and fix for last two weeks. Any hints on what could be wrong or what I could do to find out where the problem is or do you know any controller/pool electrical techs in central NJ that could help out?

Thanks

Monk,

I suspect that the Pump/Filter relay is bad or not closing..

Voltage sensors that chirp are useless when testing 240 volt equipment..

If you have a voltmeter, measure the input (Line) power to the relay (Measure between L1 and L2) and you should have 240 volts AC.. Then measure the Output (Load) side of the relay and see if you have 240 volts AC.. If you have no power going into the relay than you most likely have a bad circuit breaker. If you have 240 going into the relay and nothing coming out, then most likely the relay is bad. If you have power out of the relay then I would suspect a bad connection or bad pump.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks much, Jim. That was really good input.. Looks like the relay is bad. There were two circuits on the load side of the terminal, I moved the pump circuit to a different relay just to test, Switched it on and.. something sparked and blew on the pump side. So, know for sure the relay was bad. Couldn't find the relay info from the Compool manual, so will try to swap an unused relay to the filter pump spot. Still trying to figure out what's second circuit that was attached along with the filter pump. I see lots of jumpers going from relay output to line side of other terminal blocks... kind of confusing... but one thing at a time ..Got two objectives-
1. Try to swap faulty relay with unused relay.
2. Open up pump to see if there's a short circuit and see if it can be recovered.

Might have to end up just replacing the pump.. but that leads to other stuff to get sorted out -
1. Should I go to 2 speed pump? And If so, do I need a new controller for that?
2. If I get a new controller, should I also look at changing the DE filter and water heater.
Starting to look like a pandora box to me...

Monk,

You know there is an upgrade kit that converts your Compool unit into an EasyTouch System...

Not sure which kit you would need, but here is an example..

Thanks,

Hope folks had a good July 4th.

I have a control panel inside the house hooked up to the compool and that seems to be working fine.

I used the extra time this holiday weekend to troubleshoot some more. The pump motor is definitely shot. I heard and saw sparks fly when I tried to power it up. I have disconnected the pump now.
I replaced all the breakers and checked all the circuits. Looks good. I think there's no way around other than replacing the pump motor or the whole pump unit.

The existing pump is Waterway SVL-56 2HP 240V unit. I can't find just the pump motor or an exact replacement in stores around us. Any pointers on good pool equipment supply stores in central NJ or by jersey shore?
Our local homedepot has a 1.5HP Everbilt unit for $368. No 2HP in stock in local stores but available online - Hayward 2HP units range from $698 to $878.
Question I have is, will the 1.5HP unit do the job? I have a 24,000G inground pool with an attached spa. Or should I just order online the 2HP unit - that's twice the cost of the 1.5HP unit. Is there an easy way to figure out what capacity pump you actually need? And any brands you gurus would recommend or definitely stay away from?

Thanks much guys
Monk.

Have you considered using VS motor? InyoPools has VGreen motors that should bolt directly on to your wet end. Call them to check.
