Hi folks,

Really confuywhy the pool has turned cloudy..and overnight spike of PH(SLAM maybe?)

Last Weekend, 6/1 & 6/2.. levels were to the dot and brilliantly crystal clear.

Monday and Tuesday, 6/3 & 6/3, pool turns ever so slightly cloudy. Lots of rain and falling pollen.

Wednesday, pool ever slightly cloudy again.

Thursday I take results, CYA was high - 80. Otherwise..ok
PH - 7.2
FC - 6.5
Salt ppm - 3600

Disturbing cloudiness.. so I slam. (Second this year and first since I deep cleaned the sand filter). Target FC 21.

Test this morning...OCLT = 20
(Swg was off of course)

Let the robot do its thing.. brush etc.. absolutely no bloom of algae following the brush.

Just performed full test.. see below.

CYA - 60
FC - 19
CC - 0
TC -19
CH - 75
TA - 60
CL - 5
PH - 8.2 (assumed slam delta)
Salt ppm - 3000 (drop swg off?)

Still cloudy

And so am I....really really confused.

Am I missing something very obvious?

Thanks in advance...targeting a long hard night of pool school for a nice day swimming tomorrow.

Unfortunately, PH test is not valid when your chlorine level is higher than 10.

You mentioned lots of rain and pollen. Could you be seeing cloudiness from the pollen?

Can you post a photo of your water with something in it, like your brush or vacuum?

Did you exchange water? Wondering how CYA went from 80 to 60.

Yep, that’s definitely cloudy. Didn’t add any powdered substance?

21 FC was not high enough for either 60 or 80 CYA. You’d need 24 for the first and 31 for the last.

It’s possible your CYA was not what you thought it was, and algae got a start. Really do need to be sure on your CYA and SLAM.

Ok.

So slam tonight target is FC -24.

Is algae cloudy? I always thought it was large brown residual on the bottom when dead.

I'm not sure what this is....

Tried an old trick from mknauss with the paper towel in the skimmer.. thinking it was pollen.. no cigar. Was very green.

Green is algae. Turns grayish-white when dead, so you may be seeing lots of corpses floating around.

Be sure of your CYA, use Chlorine/CYA chart for proper SLAM level, and don’t do OCLT until water is crystal clear.

Hi Kellie.. so I've added the chlorine to target FC - 24.

I'll take another measure in 30 mins to make sure I've reached the target for the overnight test.

Also brushed the sides and bottom. Should I add DE? Help catch any reside algae in the filter, or let the sand do its job.

Thanks so much for your input. :kim:

You could add DE. If you do, you’ve got to keep your eye on your filter’s pressure.

Your filter will clear the water, it just takes time. First priority is to make sure the algae is dead!

Check all the nooks and crannies for hidden algae pockets. Stairs, ladders, lights, your skimmer, your robot, etc.
