Should I maintain FC near the high target for non-SLAM levels?
I see a test 2 days ago and another today. Get a good result and stick with that #. It will take many backwashes to make a significant dent in it.
Fill only to the 10s and its much easier to know it's definitely not a 60 and not an 80.
Then don't worry about testing CYA for a month or 5 backwashes.
High target + the recent daily loss so after today's loss, you barely touch target range.
Using 80 as an example with about 3 FC lost per day, you would dose at 11 FC, back to 14. Then when you lose 3 tomorrow, you are still elevated just in case you were wrong and ended too soon. At worst, you paused the battle and you didn't lose any ground.
FC test this morning was 13.5ppm, CC 0.5ppm. Weather will be pretty warm here this afternoon, so I might get in and vacuum it manually instead of the robot. Do people typically vacuum with their pump in fast? I have one of the standard triangle heads with the brushes.
Single speed pumps were the only option for decades and decades. So you could say that it's certainly been done before.
If the angle of the pool gets too steep the head may stick. My non scientific studies have blamed the weight of the pole pushing directly down on the vac head while its sucking for a double whammy. So you may have to reposition at times so you are reaching a little more. But it works fine.
With a VS pump I can dial it in around 2/3 for good suction while not sticking as often.
Yesterday was the first day I've been in the pool since it was constructed last October! It was a brisk 70F, but it was warm day so not too bad. I was going around cleaning the walls and floor and I noticed an opening in the vinyl wall seam where the liner comes together.
Is this normal? Do I need to get the installer back ASAP? I'm assuming I need to make sure water doesn't get in there...

Check your warranty coverage. That looks to be a defective seam "weld". Even the matching of the panels is defective. I would strongly push for a replaced liner. But, given the time between the finish of construction and when this was noticed, it might be a point of contention. The builder may want to put a patch over it. Some warranties only cover the cost of the liner itself, but no labor to remove the old or put in the new. Your builder might have a supplemental warranty that would cover it all. A well patched liner can be a lasting fix, but the appearance will not be the same as "new". And there is the question about how good or bad the patching was done - which you may not know for a couple of years. Your decision on how much of a fight to put up.
Is the step that would cause that done in the factory or likely due to the builder?
The factory. One hopes the installer noticed, but it could have been very normal appearing when installed, except for the mismatch of the pattern. Then shrinkage of the liner over the winter caused the poor seam construction to pull apart.
Ok, thanks for the info. I think at this point I would consider looking into the warranty replacement but saving the new liner for a few years and using a patch in the interim.
They are WAY ahead of you and will likely request a large piece of the defective liner. You're not the first one to demand a new liner (rightfully) and then just use the patch that they said they couldn't possibly stand to look at that required the new liner.

Nah, just that we ALL think about doing that as a way to avoid a big expense down the road. But of course, the liner company wants to avoid their expense right now. It may turn "interesting" over what labor to install will be paid for, by who.....
