Cloudy with a chance of algae...

Hello,

Hoping you guys can help me out. I've owned above ground pools, but our new home has an inground that has me puzzled, and my patience isn't what it used to be.

The specs on what I have:

40,000gal inground , (9' at deep, 3' at shallow, ~20' x 40' L &W)
1.5hp Hayworth pump
P175-U Hayworth cartridge filter (this is junk and want to replace with sand IMO) -

We bought the house in May, and the pool sat for ~4wks unattended but open to elements. Heat, sun, all the good stuff for algae growth.

June 16th, moved in and started circulating. Shock and awe up to 20-30ppm on total chlorine (according to aquacheck 7 way strips color chart), I also dumped a gallon of algaecide in as well for good measure. Strips don't even register a color on free chlorine - nothing.

ph, CYA, hardness, all of this is in check from the tests. Chlorine (cal hypo) every night (8-10, 1lb bags) to keep it up.

Pool has gone from dark green to teal over the last few days, but still cloudy. Maybe 8"-12" of visibility. I added 32oz of flocc last night (never used the stuff before), circulated for 2hrs and turned pump off (to my dismay). Waited 12hrs and nothing. I have 3 kids that look at the pool every day like a Thanksgiving turkey, but they can't use it. Pressure is mounting, and the "24hr green to clear" YouTube videos aren't helping my patience.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!
You need to follow the SLAM Process. To do that, you need a proper test kit. I suggest the TF-100 or Taylor K2006C. A proper test kit is needed to get the accurate water chemistry results needed to follow the TFP protocols.

While you are waiting on your test kit, add 5 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine / plain bleach to your pool each evening with the pump running. This will replenish the FC lost each day to the sun and also inhibit any algae in the water from growing further.
I suggest you read through Pool Care Basics - Trouble Free Pool and even look at a few of our videos TFP-TV - Trouble Free Pool
