Liquid Chlorine
Since opening my pool, it has been cloudy. We have had a lot of rain. My testing shows the following (attached). Fixes include lower pH to 7.0-7.2 with acid and then aerate to increase pH to fix high TA; use dry or liquid stabilizer to raise CYA number. Right now my TA is 160 and my CYN is 0. What kind of acid is best to use? How do you aerate? What is better dry or liquid stabilizer? Thanks a bunch for your help!!

Welcome to TFP! The cloudiness has nothing to do with your pH or TA, it's probably organics/algae. To resolve algae we follow the SLAM Process. Follow that page and you should do well.

You do need to add stabilizer for a CYA goal of 30. Stabilizer is generally the granular form while liquid is called conditioner, but they both do the same thing - increase CYA. We generally recommend stabilizer and adding it via the sock method. I'll post that below.

When the pH needs to be lowered, we recommend using muriatic acid. Keep it stored outside away from anything metal or any other chemicals.

If you have any other questions let us know.

For your reference .....

Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. After soaking for about 20-30 minutes, squeeze the sock often to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

Did you test for combined chlorine? How long has it been cloudy?

I would not worry about aerating just keep an eye on your pH and keep it on the lower end of range TA will come down on its own.

Dry CYA is a lot cheaper I usually add it to a sock and hang it in front of one of the jet returns. But liquid would work just as well but more money.

It has been cloudy since the second week in May. The total chlorine is 3.
So should I add acid to lower the pH?
Thanks for the tip about the stabilizer.
My pool is an Intex 16x32. 17280 gallons. I have an Intex SX 2800 sand pump, but put filter balls in it.

You can add a little muriatic acid to lower the pH to about 7.2. Start getting some stabilizer with a sock soaking for that CYA target of 30, and increase (and maintain) the FC to 12. Use the PoolMath APP section called "Effects of Adding" to help you with dosage amounts. Remember, after about 30 minutes of soaking, squeeze that sock to get all the CYA out.

If you follow the SLAM Process page you should do well. If you have any questions or problems along the way let us know.

Have a nice weekend. :swim:
