Cloudy water with white foamy film on top

We have supershocked our pool at this time. It is now cloudy with a white foamy film on top. Can only see about 6 inches down
We are using hth 6-way test kit. Our readings are as follows:
TC - way above 5 (which is as high as this test goes)
Bromine - way above 10 (which is as high as this test kit goes)
PH - 6.8
TA - 80 ppm
Hardness - 0
Cya - 90 ppm
it is a round 10,000 gal above ground pool
sand filter
HELP!

Hi there! Welcome to the Forum :)

The alternative is you perhaps added Algaecide?

What does "supershocked" mean exactly? Can you describe what you your process was?

The tester tests Total Chlorine, and Bromine. You have one, or the other, but not both. So whatever chemical you used to "shock" the pool, that is what you test for. Probably chlorine. Is the color in the orange/brownish range?

I had this happen to a family friend... I have some hunches, but I'm curious about your answers first. And then I have a few suggestions to try.

You need to follow the steps in the SLAM process. Adding 3 gallons of liquid chlorine two weeks ago isn't going to work, I'm sorry to be blunt.

What was in the powdered "shock"? (shocking/SLAMming is a process, not a product :) )

You need to follow the directions to "SLAM" the pool. That means taking it up to "shock" level and MAINTAINING IT, until the algae is all dead and gone. It is not a one time dose of chlorine, but rather a process.

Please start using liquid chlorine, or plain, unscented, un-thickened, Non-Cloramax'ed generic bleach. A store brand for example. Usually between 6 and 8% strength, or higher if you can find it. Just totally plain though.

And don't add anything else at this time.

Got a GOOD test kit? That is a must! tftestkits.net has the two we endorse. You must have the FAS-DPD chlorine test 'cause that tests FC up to 50ppm

Cloudy water still white foam on top

Okay, so I added 4 gallons liquid chlorine to pool, backwashed at end of day.
This morning added 4 more gallons.
Water still cloudy and top is foaming much more.
Here are the numbers I have:
Total hardness - 0
FC - 10+
TC - 10+
PH - 7.2
TA - 120
CYA - 70
Do I still keep adding chlorine? Help

Re: Cloudy water still white foam on top

Are these your own test results or the pool store?

I'll let someone chime in about your CYA level..

Nevertheless, when you're SLAMing your pool, make sure you leave you pump running 24/7 (proper circulation/filtration of the pool water is recommended). Maintain your shock level… at the start of SLAM, chlorine may decrease rapidly as algae is being killed off, so make are you test for FC every 2 hours (give or take) and maintain the shock level by adding the correct amount of chlorine (PoolMath). Also, vacuum and brush your pool each day while in SLAM mood.

Here are some links that can help you too

What was your FC level before you first added 4 gallons of liquid chlorine to your pool and what was it when you tested it again before adding another 4 gallons of chlorine?

Just read your other posts. Someone will chime in here shortly to help you further. They may need more information though.

Re: Cloudy water still white foam on top

Get a good test kit like the TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C. At least a FAS/DPD chlorine test. 10+ tells us nothing but that you have chlorine.
4 Gallons of 6% raises your FC by 23. You may/probably are just wasting chlorine just dumping in without a good test.
If you have a green pool it will sometimes get foam. IT should go a way as the algae dies.

In your original thread you said 5 was the most your test kit would go to. Now you are saying that 10 is the top end of your kit. I'm guessing you picked up a new kit, but not one we would recomend.

To effectively practice the TFPC methods, the FAS/DPD chlorine test is essential becauae it will test FC up to 50 and when needed can test to 0.2 steps. The kits sold at the pool store and big box stores generally won't won't cut it, but be careful pool store employees are known to say “it's the same thing”. Generally it's not!

Do yourself a favor, order a TF100 and at least include the XL option. That will give you what you need while you are clearing the pool, and probably enough reagents for a couple of years normal use.

The only other real option for a test kit is a Taylor K-2006. Be careful comparing prices because the K-2006 comes in sizes, designated by a letter. The basic K-2006 has .75oz bottles. You need to get the K-2006-C to get the larger bottles that you want. Even then it is a little short on the reagent & powder for the FAS/DPD test so you will still need an XL option.

At this point you are blindly pouring chlorine into your pool because you can not measure above 10. Until you have your own test kit that we can get accurate FC numbers above 10 there is nothing we can do other than feel bad about your pool.

The test kits save major bucks. Another saving: if you have Ocean State Job lot near you, they carry gallon jugs of 12.5% LC for $2.97. Cheapest around.
