Good afternoon,

I am on my 5 week of slamming and I am exhausted. After about 2 1/2 weeks i passed all three criteria. then the cloud returned.

Stats
FC 39
CC 0
TA 150
CYA 30 not visiable can see a bit a 40
Calcium 110
PH 7.8 - 8.2 hard to tell

Would high TA or Low Calcium has to do to cloudiness? Before slamming PH was between 7.2 and 7.4.
Brushing daily and adding DE for added support with cleaning.
water is clear from above but after swimming or brushing cant see other end of pool with goggles on and still not passing FC overnight test.

Please help

thank you

Your FC is way too high for your CYA level. You are at risk of damaging your liner.

Let the FC drop and stay at SLAM level FC based on [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA].

Your TA and CH are not an issue. Your pH test is invalid at your high FC.

You need to stay at SLAM level FC, not above. Also you should consider Pool School - Add DE to a Sand Filter

Take care.

Joe, I would also recommend updating your profile location so we know what city/state you're in. It makes a big difference in our advice. Also consider showing us a picture of your water. Nice to have you with us.

Oh, and your sand ….. do you know the history on it? When was the last time it was deep cleaned? Any pool store products make it to the sand?

Thank you mknauss.
We get a lot of sun over the pool from 8am to 6pm. So I tend to add a little bit more chlorine to stay on top of the sun while slamming. The liner has seen better days.

for slamming I am using 30 or 40? This is where it can be tricky for me cause i can barely see it at 40. So i have been slamming at 40 with a little extra.

thank you Texas splash. Profile has been updated.

Sand was deep cleaned in 2012.

Your water is not that bad. I was anticipating much worse. You are close to passing. Just remember:
- With a CYA of 30, your SLAM FC should 12. If you go with a CYA of 40, then it can be 16; but no higher. Then it's just a waste.
- 2012 is a long time since the sand was deep cleaned. You could really benefit from the Deep Cleaning a Sand Filter page. Once done, give it a couple days to work. If you still think the water needs a little help, then try adding a little DE to the sand. Pool School - Add DE to a Sand Filter

But you are getting close.

So you are saying it is clear but after swimming it is cloudy? Are you vacuuming the pool daily? Are you making sure the DE you are adding is not being blown back into the pool? Is the main drain open so the chlorinated water is able to flow through it?

Yes the more the pool gets stirred up the cloudier it gets. Vacuuming ever other day. Also using DE. How can I tell if the DE is being blown back into the pool? How do I tell if the main is open? I took both plugs from the skimmer basket. Is there a way to test main?

Also how does high chlorine affect the liner?

Main drain flow depends on how it was plumbed. If the MD line goes to the skimmer first (one of those two holes), then it shares suction with the skimmer. In that case, there is often times a diverter valve (movable disc) at the bottom to adjust which hole is covered to adjust flow. For other pools, the MD has it's own line to the equipment pad, adjusted by a 3-way valve. As for high chlorine, that's when you would refer to the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. When you compare your pool's current CYA to the SLAM/Shock FC level, you can see the limit. While there is a slight "buffer" built-in at the peak, you don't want to go too high over your SLAM level or stay there too long as the chlorine is too strong for the available CYA to protect the liner.

Are you running the pump 24/7? Is the filter set to "filter" and not "re-circulate"? Are you seeing the pressure on the filter pressure gauge rise and does it go to 0 when the pump is off? If the water is clear enough to see bottom you should be able to see if a puff of white comes out of the return after adding DE to the sand filter. If you see a puff of white be sure you are rinsing the sand well after each backwash, before going back to the filter position.
