My husband took charge of closing pool this year and apparently no polyquat was added by the pool people . My husband added about 2.5 gallons of 12% and completely cleaned the pool but no one added algaecide and now the cover is on and water level has been lowered water removed from lines and gizmos installed. How much of a problem do you think this will be? Should we open up the cover and add the algaecide, and circulate with a hose and pump?

What type of cover do you have? Solid or Mesh? Poly 60 is optional, but the SLAM level should have been maintained until closing. I do not believe the amount of 12.5% that was added raised the level to SLAM. As Maddie mentioned, please open up real early or you could have a nice green opening. At closing, you are merely stalling the growth of algae until the water is cold enough where algae can not harvest. Again, open the pool early.

Got it! Thank you both so much—it is a mesh cover. Our CYA struggled to stay between 30 and 40 this year because of tremendous amounts of rain. Sorry now we did not get that final free chlorine total. Next week is the week for confirming an opening date. Late April might be the right time.
