Chlorine levels remaining very high days after chlorine shock.

Great Job on the kit!!!

All your numbers look good, except the CYA is high. With CYA of 90, you will need to keep your FC between 10-12 to sanitize the pool. Your CYA is high due to puck use. I would not, at this point, use pucks or any dry chlorinating product.

You need to use this tool and chlorinate based on your CYA. Link-->FC/CYA Levels

I would do this test tonight to confirm you don't have algae (even if you don't see it). Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

You might think about replacing 30% of your pool water to reduce CYA to 60, this will reduce the chlorine requirement.

I’ve always been using pucks in past seasons and my current CYA is likely from last season. I haven’t used any pucks yet, only granular chlorine shock (does that have CYA in it?).

What is a good liquid chlorine to get? Anything that’s more affordable than other.

And another Q on this, when going on vacation how do you all keep your chlorine up while you’re away if you don’t have someone to monitor it for you (I don’t)?

Yes.

With a cya result of 90, you need to do the diluted testing method for cya. Follow these directions:

  1. Fill the mixing bottle to the lower mark with pool water.
  2. Continue filling the mixing bottle to the upper mark with tap water.
  3. Shake briefly to mix.
  4. Pour off half of the contents of the mixing bottle, so it is again filled to the lower mark.
  5. Continue the test normally from step 2, but multiply the final result by two.

WalMart "Pool Essentials Liquid Chlorine" is about the best price in NY.

Salt Water Chlorine Generator. If you don't have one, best thing is to raise FC to SLAM level and float some pucks.

24(2024) 144 (day 144 / April 24 per poolstored).

No need to split hairs on the day. I guesstimate 30 days per month when looking at the bottle in the store.

144 is 6 days short of 150 (5 full months). So 'end of April' is way close enough off the top of your head.

Thanks so much for pushing the Pro Kit. It’s like turning the lights on compared to using strips, which give you a “sorta close but actually who really knows” kind of accuracy. lol. Now I have actually numbers.
One of my bosses said in a meeting once… “you can’t manage what you can’t measure”. At the time he was talking about managing IT for our school district, but it certainly applies here. Adding chem to your pool based on test strips is crazy, but I didn’t realize until I saw some real deal measurements.

I KNOW!!!! :ROFLMAO:

It's literally jam packed with value.

Most need to see it to fully grasp it. Sometimes we lose them before that point.

Yesterday I drained down below the skimmer a few times and refilled. Looks like I successfully got rid of some CYA, and FC as well of course.

Tested again this morning and
CYA is now at approx 65.
(getting the hang of doing that CYA test).
FC is now at 7.

Looks I’m more on target now with FC/CYA ratio. I’ll probably drain a little more today and nudge that CYA below 60. But for now I won’t add anything.

I’m thinking that I should keep nudging CYA down leading up to vacation so when I add pucks while away (only about a week) I won’t end up overdoing CYA again.

Got the kit and my numbers.

FC 9
CC .25
TA 140
PH 7.8
Cal Hardness 150
CYA 90

Currently not adding any chlorine via pucks or anything at all. That 9 FC is still the remaining shock from last week slowly dropping.
Dont let your FC fall too much more as it is already low.

Edit - with your new CYA of 70, you still should be 8-10 (you are at 7).

Here is my handy chart that helps me keep the FC/CYA straight:

Looks like I should get my FC back up to 9 now. Gotta calculate how much 12.5% liquid chlorine to put in my 10k gallon pool to bump it 2ppm.
I used the Effects of Adding in Pool Math and for your pool, every 1/4 gallon of 12.5% Liquid Chlorine will add 3 FC. Also don't be afraid to run a little hot and overshoot your target so as the FC remains in the target range as if drifts down.
