Hello there? I'm hoping someone can help me understand my new equipment. My pool is only a few months old and I've taken over the maintenance from the pool company. Every single day I go out to my control panel I see this message (see picture)
I have done so much reading and can't figure out why this keeps happening. I have the Hayward Pro Logic P4 if that helps. I found some information on resetting the average salt, but I don't understand why I have to do this every day. Can someone explain it to me?

The chlorinator cycle is 180 minutes. Whatever percentage is set, that's how long the chlorinator will run per cycle.

For example, if you have the percentage set to 50%, it will run for 90 minutes and then be off for 90 minutes.

Then, it will reverse polarity and begin a new cycle.

The average salinity is just a rolling average of the last few instant salinity readings.

The average should not have to be reset except in unusual circumstances.

What is the average salinity, instant salinity and the salinity as measured by a salt test kit?

What cell size do you have?

OMG that makes so much sense! that explains why it's off sometimes and on sometimes since it goes into cycles. So when I see it off, I just have to wait and it will cycle back on? Phew!! I've been worried. Sure wish this stuff was actually explained in the user manual.
I'm not sure what the average and instant are. I haven't really figured out my system yet. I know my salt level is at 3100 tested by pool company yesterday. I have the T cell 15. Having a hard time keeping the chlorine in the pool but found out yesterday I have zero cya in it. Added a gallon yesterday so we'll see where we are in a few days. Pool is only a few months old so getting the chemicals balanced is a chore. Ph is slowly coming down.
thanks for your help. This forum is going to be my "go to" place from now on :)

Welcome to the forum! This forum advocates for pool owner testing of their water chemistry.
Order a TF-100
The only other real option for a test kit is a Taylor K-2006-C. Be careful comparing prices because the K-2006 comes in sizes, designated by a letter. The basic K-2006 has .75oz bottles. You need to get the K-2006-C to get the larger bottles that you want.
I also have the Speedstir. It makes testing much easier.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.

You can go to diagnostics to check cell voltage, amps, temperature and instant salinity. Instant salinity will read zero during the off part of the cycle.

You can go to Settings to set the percentage.

The default menu shows the average salinity.

You should get a K-1766 salt test kit.

Fantastic! I came here really quick to ask my question and haven't had time to read yet. I know that's no the best way to enter a forum but it's been driving me nuts. Thank you for the links, I will study up. I've also been doing a bit of research on my own test kits, now I know which one to get.
