Hello from Dela-WHERE?!?!,

Last week we had a green pool problem. I am 32 years old and never messed with a pool besides getting in one. My father-in-law was at wits end on what to do and started saying, "I will just go salt and be done with it". As many of you know there is a opening cost to all that conversion. Well in the past week, I have religiously been reading and watching videos trying to wrap my head around everything, and decided to step in with some offerings. I told him we need to shock the life out of it. We added 7lbs of bags to the water. This was on a Monday. Tuesday came and we noticed the water starting to change. At this point we were back-washing twice a day. As I kept reading and learning I came to some more conclusions. By Thursday the water stayed blue and cloudy. I bought some Floc and dumped it in hoping it would drop to the bottom and I could vacuum it up. Come Friday morning there was a ton of junk on the floor. I proceeded to vacuum, but it was still somewhat cloudy. Friday night I dumped two more pounds in and let it sit over night running the pumps. Saturday morning I go outside and the water is clear. I vacuumed to waste again, twice that morning actually, as I saw more crud falling to the bottom. I forgot to mention we got a water test done on Friday, and it said the FC level was around 1.8ppm, and CYA was 137ppm. My red flag went off due to my many readings on this forum. I told my FIL to immediately stop using the 3in trichlor tablets. After doing research I learned that they contain stabilizer and being CYA was our issue, and lack of FC, I didn't think it was wise to continue using them. Since that Friday reading and the new reading we got on Sunday, we have vacuumed to waste, several times and refilled each time to run the pumps. Come Sunday the water was even more clear than Saturday. The new readings were a CYA level of 106, and FC level of 8.4. I plan on continuing the slow lowering of the CYA level as we don't want to drain and refill and make sure (using pool math and the pool math app, awesome btw), the FC levels are in the range for the CYA at hand.

In short this forum and the many videos I watched on YouTube were a major help in getting problem under control. In a weeks time I don't pride to be an expert but I feel my knowledge and understanding is worlds better than it was before and I am able to piece together what needs to be done. I have since, bought a Taylor K2006, (still waiting for it in the mail), continue to read and learn, and will be moving over to the BBB/TFPC method at the start of next season in hopes of keeping maintenance costs down.

I wanted to thank this forum and all the people who have had issues before me lol, so I could read and learn from that. It has been a huge help and a great learning experience. However, I think I just landed myself as the new pool guy for the household.. I guess that's a double edged sword lol, but I am sure this forum will guide me through any hardships I may come across.

Once again thank you and for reading this wall of text!!
