I'll try to make this short... our hayward pump died, and this winter we were planning on changing over to salt water when we had a bit more time. In the mean time we NEED a pump before we have a swamp! Im already going to have to SLAM it im sure.
My question is..If I replace my Hayward SP 1.5 HP with another Hayward SP 1.5 HP, can I use it when I change over to salt water later this year? We really dont have time to do the whole change over right now ( I'm sure it wont take long, but we're in the middle of a long list of renovations)
I don't want to buy a replacement pump only to find out it won't work with a new salt system.

Hurry... please..... I can feel my pool turning as I type!

SUPER!! Now how should I start investigating what salt system is best for our pool? Are there articles on TFP? AS I said we're doing it ourselves. My hubby is very handy by trade. Im looking to keep it around 1500-2000 if possible. It just seems kind of daunting.
Is there a pool school for changing over ?:)

Be aware you replacing a single speed pump. When you add a SWCG, with your size pool, the best you will be able to do is get a 60K rated SWCG. Thus in summer you will be running your pump up to 18 hours per day to generate your chlorine. Replacing your pump now with a two speed or variable speed pump will dramatically reduce your electrical consumption.

For a large, standalone SWCG, Circupool has systems that will work. Again, get a 60K gallon rated system.

We have a couple articles about SWG as follows:
Pool School - Salt Water Chlorine Generators
Pool School - Water Balance for SWGs

I'll have to let others chime in on an personal preference for brands and specific mods, but in general, the biggest thing we emphasize here is to get a SWG that is rated for twice the size of your pool. This prevents the SWG from becoming overwhelmed and ensures your pool can generate the required amount of chlorine required. A few searches should for SGW install should reveal a few threads about previous install lessons and tips. But if you don't find what you want, you can always start a thread in another sub-forum just for the SWG installation portion if you have difficulties.

OK I did read that you should get a system twice the size of your pool to reduce electric consumption. So I need a two speed pump? I typically run the pump 12 hrs a day in the summer pools DIRECTLY in the sun which is great but algae is always lurking.
I guess I need to read up on variable or two speed. How do I make sure I get a big enough pump for my size pool? I think we just replace the Haywood with the exact same hayward that was on before.

You may be able to get a two speed motor to mate up to your wet end pump.

Call InyoPools (might have to wait until Monday) and see what will fit.

A two speed for your situation would be fine. At low speed it will be fine to circulate your pool.

What do you use to clean the pool? Robot, suction or pressure side cleaner?

A two speed pump uses a timer. They make two speed timers if you need to schedule both low and high speed.

Variable speed pumps come with an internal timer. But you would need your existing timer for your SWCG as you must have a primary safety device that removes power to the SWCG when the pump is not running.

Sure they do. I would suggest contacting InyoPools for what work best in your situation.

In the mean time. You can get a low priced sub pump to keep your water moving or just brush several times per day. Be sure to add sufficient liquid chlorine each day to keep your FC well above your Target ppm based on [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]

Just saw this.. we have a polaris 380
So I need to set up the high speed on the pump with the Polaris timer
then set up the low speed on the pump with the SWCG?

The cell is just " in line" ... no timer needed for that?

Correct. You would need a two speed timer. The SWCG would be tied to the low speed side of the timer. It will run whenever your pump is running low speed.
