Cell threads stripped

I have a T15 salt cell (Leslies replacement for a Hayward Aqua Rite). The threads are stripped on the male part of one end that connects to the system with a collar. I was able to muscle it back together to stop it from leaking when I cleaned the cell recently, but the threads are so mutilated I am sure I won't be able to do that again. The cell is not old. I don't want to replace it just for this. I was thinking of getting a soft 3" O-ring and seeing if that will seal it the next time. Suggestions?

Never heard of stripped threads on a cell.

How did the threads get damaged?

Pictures?
The threads were damaged when I put it back together with channel locks. I saw the pieces of threading that came off. The collar was always a tough fit on that end of the unit (maybe I should have used something to lubricate it or some plumbers tape?). The only way I could make a photo would be if I took it apart, and I am afraid it couldn't be screwed back one more time without leaking - that's the reason for this inquiry. In the normal life of a salt cell, I will probably need to clean it many times before it will be due for replacement otherwise.
