Cause of damage to DE filter

Is it possible that an acid startup after replastering, followed by acid bath 2 months later could damage a filter so that DE would start leaking into pool just after the acid bath was finished? CH level is now 1000 after acid bath. The material being vacuumed up is gritty and is effervescent - seems to be a combination of DE and calcium/plaster. After leaking started I thoroughly cleaned grids and filter- did not notice any tears or leaks. Filter was completely new last fall. Leaks continued after cleaning. I did have to backwash during the acid bath. Trying to figure out if things are happening coincidentally or if one is causing the other. TIA.
