Can't get Chlorine to hold

Pool store guy said to me before - I should vacuum to waste if cleaning up algae. If I vacuum this evening, should I vacuum to waste? Or backwash? Thx

You can vacuum to waste. It reduces the amount of organics the chlorine has to destroy. But if it is dead algae, then just vac to filter.

This is dropping very fast, I don't think hourly will keep it above or SLAM level. If it drops that low am I pretty much having to start over?

Find this hard to believe, how is this possible that it is algae knocking down the FC if the pool is really clear?
 
You're not starting over - the chlorine is going away because it's killing things. Keep going at it, and the drop will be less and less as more dies :)
 
I recently dealt with a green pool that took some 60+ gallons. Once you consume what is consuming the chlorine via slamming you will see the pool turning and start to hold on to more of the chlorine. I eventually got it done but as it has been said keep at it and don't let the FC drift too far from the slam level till you are done.

Question on testing CC:

I didn't notice pink after the 5 drops of 0003, but then checked Pool Math to see how much Chlorine I'll have to add and looked back (30 sec) and it seemeda maybe barely, slightly pink/off white after drops 0003) so... Does that mean there was some CC possibly 0.5 (one drop cleared it to white white)... Or you have to go off the immediate reading after swirling?

As a point of reference, I went through 32 gallons of 10% bleach over five days in the SLAM process I just finished. The water was clear at the start but was dropping lots of dead algae in the bottom. It took a lot of bleach at first just to get to the 16 ppm SLAM target for my case. My wife thought I was crazy pouring in two gallons every few hours and I wish I had taken a picture of all the empty jugs at the end. Keep at it.

I hear that! My wife thought it was nuts too. I'm buying bulk currently, recycling bin is already full. Pool store guys that sell it think I'm gonna burn/bleach the pool liner too.

Quick question: Did that dead algae appear like grey dirt in the pool? I'm starting to see a bunch tiny little specks of dirt on the bottom. But it wasn't windy today at all and no one in and out of pool for dirt/sand to get in....
 
You will lose more FC during the day to the sun, especially at elevated levels like needed for a SLAM. Leave CYA at 30 for the slam. When you’re done you can see what loss you have down at standard levels for 30 CYA and make a decision to raise the CYA if needed.

- added 0.5L chlorine to raise to 12 again.

This is good, but now what? Continue to hold at SLAM level? Or is it good to let the FC level drop due to minimum loss overnight.

Pool is clear too, I vacuumed at sundown. And there is a just a little bit of the grey dirt/dead algae on the bottom.
