Can polyquat be added in front of a deep end return like liquid chlorine so it gets dispersed around the pool quickly? If so, do you need to dilute it in a bucket of water before pouring it in since it rather oily and do you need to brush it in after adding it? I normally pour the polyquat around the perimeter of the pool and brush it in but I won’t be able to do it that way this year because our pool will be covered when it is added. (I’m putting the mesh cover on a month before closing since there are 4 large trees next to the pool that make pool maintenance difficult). The only easy way to get the polyquat in with the cover on is to peel back the cover by the deep end return and pour it in by the deep end return. I don’t want to skip the polyquat and just close at shock level because the water temperature probably won’t be below 60 yet and I’ve had success with polyquat in the past.

Depending on where in TN you are, you probably don’t need it. I’ve never used it, but I close much later. Best to get one of the cover strap removal tools (PVC pipe can work) and pull the cover back and brush it in a bit or drop a pump down there to mix the water.
The pump will be on when the polyquat is added. I can’t easily brush around the pool because it would take too long to remove all of the anchors and peel back the cover. I don’t want to skip the polyquat since I’m closing before the water temperature will be below 60. I wish I could wait until later to close it but my pool company doesn’t have any later appointments available. Since the cover will already be on, all my pool company will be doing is blowing out the lines and winterizing the equipment.

"In our recommended approach for winterization, the pool should be "shocked" with about 5-10 ppm chlorine to destroy any lingering oxidant demand, to remove any residual ammonia or chloramine, etc. After a couple of days, adjust the pH back to 7.2-7.6 and add Polyquat 60 at the maximum rate allowed by the label. This approach allows you to have the maximum benefit from both chemicals. One more point about winterizing: after the addition of Polyquat 60, be sure to keep the circulation pump on for at least 24 hours to make sure that the Polyquat 60 is thoroughly distributed throughout the pool."

I never got an answer to my question regarding whether or not polyquat 60 can be added in front of a deep end return like liquid chlorine so it gets dispersed around the pool quickly. Has anyone tried this and know that it will work? The bottle says to pour it around the pool and brush afterwards but I won’t be able to add it that way because the cover will be on. The consistency of polyquat is thicker than the consistency of liquid chlorine so I wonder if it will get distributed around the pool if it is added in front of a deep end return without brushing afterwards. I'm tired of dealing with all of the leaves so I'd like to go ahead and put the cover on this weekend and wait until closing day in a few weeks before putting the polyquat in. I don't want to skip the polyquat since the water temperature probably won't be below 60 degrees yet on my scheduled closing day and we've had success with polyquat in the past.

I premixed mine when using it back in the day. I devided the bottle into 4 rounds with a 5 gallon bucket and it really dispersed well.

I was going to suggest the same. Thinning it first should help it disburse better when poured at the return.
Did you add all 4 rounds in front of the deep end return or did you add 1-2 rounds in front of a return in the shallow end too? Since polyquat is kind of thick and oily, is there anything else I could do to ensure that the polyquat gets dispersed throughout the pool and doesn't just fall to the bottom near the return? I wish I could brush after adding it but it would be difficult to do this since the cover is heavy and the anchors are rather difficult to remove.
I did all 4 in the same spot. The diluted bucket bloomed across the pool in seconds. The first one was fun to watch before the whole thing got a little cloudy.
You can brush surprisingly far with only a small window open. The 12 or 16ft pole will easily get the immediate area.
