Can I turn my old dichlor feeder into a Liquid Chlorine Doser?

Hello! Long time TFP Follower, First Time Poster. That said after several years of hand-pouring bleach I'm in desperate need of an automated system. I've read posts about peristaltic pump set ups but it seems like I have several of the components...

My Polaris Watermatic G-1000 Dichlor Doser doesn't work but we leave it in the system because it provides a reading of the chlorine in the pool. We also have 2 timers - one is for the pressure cleaner, the other is open. (see pics).

Seems like I should be able to retro this system to liquid? If even just a gravity flow into the G-100 and have it returned into the pool that way. (I know it says right there "Dichlor Only) ! Or what about a large container of LC that is triggered by the C-310 Watermatic reader?

I'm no engineer, so thanks for spelling out your thoughts! I can have my pool guys help me execute if I can articulate. TIA!

Welcome to posting on TFP  - after lurking for almost 3 years ?

ORP has proven not to be reliable when there is CYA in the pool water. And it is usually recommended not to reuse containers for different chemicals - so repurposing a dichlor feeder for use with liquid chlorine may not be a good idea.

Let's see what others have to say.

NEVER a good idea to mix the two and the tank on that Dichlor feeder appears to be too small to do you any good. With a pool that size, have you considered a SWG?

I don't use Dichlor - haven't since I started w TFP and found my CYA at 300000+ Ha! Was thinking about slow flow of CL into the feeder.

I asked my pool guy about SWG - he said that the salt would reek havoc on the auto cover we use daily. (3 little boys at home)

Nope. Badly managed pool water chemistry does that!
Ask @YippeeSkippy about her autocover and SWCG.

You already have some salt in your water from bleach, muriatic acid, sweat and other things...you might even have quite a bit.

Use of an auto cover with the correct amount of salt for a SWCG to run properly shouldn't create any additional problems for your cover - especially if you are keeping your TFP chemistry numbers and CSI in check - I would think that things like really low or high PH would be more of an issue for your cover and the rest of your equipment. I have a cover and I figure that salt will be the last thing that damages the cover - it will fail for some other reason long before the salt somehow degrades the cover or mechanical stuff enough to cause something to fail.

Regular maintenance on the cover, the motor, and tracks to keep things clean, lubed, and running correctly will further help to reduce the small additional corrosion you might get from salt based pool water.

Warranty might be an issue, if you are still under warranty, and your cover company forbids using the cover on a salt pool for warranty, but it sounds like your pool is a few years old at least.

I understand the desire to repurpose some old hardware.. but it wasn't meant to work for liquid chlorine... I agree with the others, if you want to automate your chlorine delivery use a SWG. I converted my pool 15 years ago to salt and haven't looked back. In fact removing the dichlor system and controller will give you the room to put in a SWG and its controller ;-) And it looks to be in good shape, I bet you could sell it on flea bay and recoup some of your costs.

We recommend sizing a SWG at least 2x your pool volume.

If you go with Circupool, the RJ45 Plus would work. Looks like they are still offering their upgrade sale - so you could buy the RJ30 Plus, add $4 (July 4th sale) and receive the RJ45 Plus. They usually have some type of "sale" going on, so if you miss this $4 sale there will probably be another soon.

Thoughts on the CORE Series vs. the RJ Series? FYI I run my VS pump 24/7

At what setting RPM's are you running 24/7? If you install a SWG you only need to run it around 1200rpm long enough to produce the FC needed. I run mine around 4 hrs at this time of the year with high UV index, in Nebraska probably less.

Never looked on the far side of the pump - you are right - Intelliflow 2 VST PN 011055

I've been running on 1 for most of the day until it goes to 3 tight before the timer for the pressure cleaner comes on for about 2 hours.

(1) is set 900.
(2) - 1600
(3) - 2000
(4) 2800
