Can I open sand filter and add CYA granules on top of sand?

I’m a long time lurker on TFP and currently follow the recommended best practices for maintaining my pool and equipment (in signature) i.e. liquid chlorine and acid dosing, self testing water multi x per week with TF-100 kit and many other best practices.

I purchased my house 10 years ago with the pool already built and will be doing a drain/refill for the first time due to calcium hardness being above acceptable and manageable (very hard well water). While the pool is down I plan on doing a deep cleaning of the sand filter (garden hose method which I do twice a year) and adding a SWG to my system. I’m having water hauled in from a municipal source and have a few questions about rebalancing the water after the pool is filled and, as the thread title states, a question about a method I’m considering to add CYA (granular) during the balancing process:

What is the proper order for balancing the water?
—- My current plan is: CYA, PH/Alkalinity, Chlorine, salt, CH (if needed but doubtful).

Can I add the granular CYA directly to the sand filter on top of the sand through the maintenance / sand fill port when I’m done with the deep clean?
—- I plan to set my CYA level at 50ppm since I will be adding a SWG which will require a little over 7lbs. In the past I’ve added CYA when needed by putting it in a sock in the filter basket but this seems impractical for this large of an amount. Since I will already have the sand filter open, and plan on running the pump at full RPM for a few days after the refill, I am considering putting the CYA directly on top of the sand just prior to buttoning the filter back up and restarting the pump. My theory is since the CYA is granular and much courser than the sand the water will pass through it just fine and dissolve it in the process which will be faster / less labor intensive than doing it traditionally over several days. This seems like an almost too simple of a way to do it that I haven’t seen suggested or tried before so I’m thinking I might be missing a potential problem. Any reason(s) NOT to do it this way?

A quick note on the SWG. I plan on installing it while the pool is down but don’t plan on running it until the water is balanced and stable.

Thank you in advance for any input / suggestions and thank you very much for all of the help and knowledge I’ve gained over the years from this site and its members.

You don’t want to add anything but sand to the sand filter. It’ll wash out during the first backwash. In addition, the only order of chemical additions is chlorine is top of the list. The rest can be managed in any order you want, just keep additions of different stuff 30min apart with the pump running. Cya isn’t important enough to worrying about adding to the filter. Hang it in a sock in front of a pool return so it gets swished around. Hang two (or more) socks if needed.

Dissolving 10+ lbs of acid sludge inside your equipment, 3 ft from a $1500(?) SWG ? What could go wrong ? Maybe it even works 39 times until it doesnt but the regular way is easy enough to never risk it.

FC is king.

CYA can soak while everything else goes on.

Managing Ph lowers the TA if its higher.

CH and salt can be done at any time so long as you have the bandwidth for just that and arent doing too much.

*give any adds except the soaking CYA 30 mins to mix and a good brushing before moving onto anything else. Add any if it away from the CYA or pull the CYA for that addition if that spot is your only choice.
