Hi,
I'm a relatively new pool owner. Last year was my first time closing the pool, which unfortunately coincided with the birth of my first child
. I naively decided that cleaning out the DE filter could wait until spring, and forgot to open the bottom drain valve. So today I opened it up to find the main support column burst to pieces.

My DE filter is a Waterway Crystal Water. It seems to be pretty old, I think from around 2003. Other than the brand name and model on the label, nothing is legible. I have no idea what the part/model # is.
My question is: in terms of finding replacement parts, has this unit stayed the same for the last 15 years? Because I don't see any other qualifiers when I look at parts online. I'd hate to order the wrong part. It seems like there are 3 sizes: 36, 48 and 60 sq ft.
I assume mine is the 36 sq-ft, because I am measuring each grid at 18" x 18". So that is 2.25 sq ft per face, times 2 (faces per grid), times 8 (# of grids), equaling 36 sq. ft. Would this be correct? Not sure if you guys can tell just by looking at the unit, but here is a picture just in case.

So I'm hoping this is the right part: Waterway Grid De Support *** Shaft 36 Sq Ft (550-4380) - INYOPools.com. Would somebody be able to confirm?
Also, what the heck is the purpose of this column anyway? It's capped off at the bottom so it's clearly not a flow pipe. Does it have anything to do with trapping air bubbles near the top?
Thanks and sorry for the long post!
Jose
