Burst support column in DE filter

Hi,

I'm a relatively new pool owner. Last year was my first time closing the pool, which unfortunately coincided with the birth of my first child :). I naively decided that cleaning out the DE filter could wait until spring, and forgot to open the bottom drain valve. So today I opened it up to find the main support column burst to pieces.

My DE filter is a Waterway Crystal Water. It seems to be pretty old, I think from around 2003. Other than the brand name and model on the label, nothing is legible. I have no idea what the part/model # is.

My question is: in terms of finding replacement parts, has this unit stayed the same for the last 15 years? Because I don't see any other qualifiers when I look at parts online. I'd hate to order the wrong part. It seems like there are 3 sizes: 36, 48 and 60 sq ft.

I assume mine is the 36 sq-ft, because I am measuring each grid at 18" x 18". So that is 2.25 sq ft per face, times 2 (faces per grid), times 8 (# of grids), equaling 36 sq. ft. Would this be correct? Not sure if you guys can tell just by looking at the unit, but here is a picture just in case.

So I'm hoping this is the right part: Waterway Grid De Support *** Shaft 36 Sq Ft (550-4380) - INYOPools.com. Would somebody be able to confirm?

Also, what the heck is the purpose of this column anyway? It's capped off at the bottom so it's clearly not a flow pipe. Does it have anything to do with trapping air bubbles near the top?

Thanks and sorry for the long post!

Jose

Hi Rio,
welcome to TFP.

I dont know if your math is right on determining the size because frankly, I dont really know how its determined. So I did some googling. You can determine the size by measuring the filter case, and then compare it to the dimensions in this link. From there you should be able to find the parts you need.
