Bromine is always zero

Hello!
When we got our hot tub (about 500 gallons) we were told that all we needed to do besides balance PH and Alkilinity, was to add Leisuretime Renew to the spa weekly. Each week when I check the levels, it reads 0 bromine. I am adding the recommended amount and it seems like the bromine from the Renew is only lasting a day or two before reading 0. We dont even keep the tub that hot. Was hoping to not need to keep a floater in there.

Am I missing a step? Any help is appreciated.

Did you purposefully choose bromine over chlorine or was it just the default they told you about? Bromine seems pretty difficult to use, but I’m honestly not all that familiar with the benefits.

I am confident that is innaccurate in a properly chlorinated body of water. I’m not sure how many bromine users are around here. I did find one threads that includes some links to some advice on it and a couple people that have used it.

Bromine or Chlorine?

OK I've used bromine in the past, and I have a new tub should I use bromine or chlorine. I've "heard" bromine is harder on hot tub equipment/shell/cover then chlorine. Any thoughts on that statement?

According to the MSDS, Leisuretime Renew is an MPS-based product. Did you at any point add sodium bromide to your tub as part of the startup process? Generally for a bromine system you establish a bromine bank by adding sodium bromide, and then 'activate' that bromide into bromine by adding MPS (or chlorine bleach). If you did not add sodium bromide, and are not using a bromine floater, then most likely what you are seeing when you test for bromine is just residual oxidizer capacity from leftover MPS in the tub. I can't find the document on the 3-step bromine system that I'm pretty sure is posted here somewhere, but the three essential parts are 1) a sodium bromide bank created through a one time addition of sodium bromide at startup, 2) activating that bromide through MPS or bleach, and 3) bromine tablets in a floater.

When I filled the tub, I did use bromide. I was told after that, I just needed to add Renew weekly (more often after heavy use). We are barely using the tub and each week I go to add Renew and the bromine is zero.

Weekly may not be often enough even with low use, especially if the tub hasn't been recently purged to clean out any residual biofilms in the plumbing, even if it's new. Any time the sanitizer hits zero there's an opportunity for microbial growth. I would add enough of the Renew to get up above 10ppm 24 hours later and test daily for a while to see what's needed to maintain around 3-5ppm. It's a lot easier with a floater.
