Boulders and undisturbed soil

I'm trying to figure out the best place to put an on-ground pool in my back yard. The least sloping part is a mix between boulders and dirt. I understand the pool needs to be on "undisturbed soil". What is the recommendation when the level of depth is a mix of boulders and dirt? Do you dig past the depth and break the boulder then build it back up in a uniform manner, or is it ok to have part of the base be boulder and the rest soil? I'm afraid that with the latter the boulder will not settle at all, and the soil will just a little. Thanks

You can dig a "test" hole - which I didn't learn about until after we built our retaining wall. Similar to digging a well.

In short, big rock means: more money, more time, and maybe moving your pool. We had friends that had to build a retaining wall rather than dig further down. I would imagine a lot depends on the type/size of rock.

I'm afraid no matter where we locate it, there will be a mix of big boulders and dirt. I don't see any where that we can get a complete foundation that is just dirt. So the question is, do you dig past the depth and break the boulder then build it back up in a uniform manner, or is it ok to have part of the base be boulder and the rest undisturbed soil?
