Bonding wire has been cut!!

Need to replace the bonding wire from the pool light niche to the junction box. I cant find any #8 solid copper insulated. Can the replacement be #8 solid copper bare? Is it ok for the bare copper inside the wiring conduit? If I convert to low voltage 12V lighting do I even need to replace the bonding wire?

Thanks, Lee

The pool light bonding ground wire in the conduit must be insulated (green) #8 solid wire, it doesn't matter the voltage of the light.

Home depot or Lowes should have it in stock. Look in the sold be the foot area.

Well I tried to correct part of this, but not sure it worked on my phone, so figure I should just post.

A bonding wire is ALWAYS a bare wire and not in conduit.

The ground wire is green and in the conduit and does not need to be 8 awg, it should match the line wire size.

Thanks you again! I just assumed the green insulated wire in the conduit was #8. Maybe bit isn't!! I really know nothing about what I am doing, except the heavy gauge green wire in the conduit is severed and I know it needs to be repaired, Changing out the whole light is easy. I just can't find any pool guys who will give me the time of day and help me resolve the issue! I just need an expert who can help me run the correct new wiring from the light niche to the junction box.
Thanks again for the advice!!

From 2017 NEC for underwater lights

"680.23 B(2)(b) Non-metallic conduit. Where non-metallic conduit is used an 8 AWG insulated solid or stranded bonding jumper will be installed in this conduit..."

So I'm assuming the conduit in question is PVC because there was already a bonding jumper in the conduit.

Thanks for that quote. I thought bonding wire was attached to the outside of the light niche, so being in the conduit would not make sense. But perhaps that is not how the niche it bonded after all.

There is a bond lug on the outside of the niche that receives the solid bare #8 bond wire.

When non-metallic conduit is used, there is a lug on the inside of the niche that receives a #8 green insulated wire.

The #8 green wire in the conduit is sometimes referred to as a ground or bonding jumper.

The outside connection is the bonding connector as required by Article 680-22 of the NEC. The NEC requires that the bonding wire be AWG 8 or larger. Local codes may require a continuous loop and may require that the bonding point on the fixture housing (niche) be
encapsulated. The inside connection is the grounding connector as required by Article 680-20 (b) of the NEC. The NEC requiresthat where a nonmetallic conduit is used, an AWG 8 insulated copper conductor be installed in this conduit. This conductor is to be connected to the niche grounding connector. The connector and wire termination must be encapsulated in 3M Inc. Scotch Cast Wet Niche Potting Compound No. 2135 (UL File E130394) or equivalent to protect such connection from the possible deteriorating effect of pool water.

Thanks all! This has been great information, especially the diagram.!!

James,
Thanks so much! One last question?? What material should I use to waterproof the connection at the bond lug once the wire is connected/

Thanks again!

Any wet niche potting compound listed as suitable for pool lights such 3M Inc. Scotch Cast Wet Niche Potting Compound No. 2135 or AquaBond.

Also, the #8 green insulated can be solid or stranded.
