I don't think I have ever seen a drain placed just behind the coping........does the deck slope towards that drain?

Dave, I believe the deck is very short so there's not a lot of options....
Perhaps but I don't think a deck sloping towards the pool or even flat is very good practice.
Timing is right- bad backfill seems takes a 2 or 3 years to bite a pipe..

Capt'n, what's the slope of the deck from the coping to the edge?
Also, it seems at the edge of the deck by the plants, it drops off significantly and more so after the vegetation. what type of rains and how often do you receive that warrants needing the drain where it is positioned? thanks
