Almost finished a SLAM except the clear pool bullet.

Added DE to sand filter to help filter the cloudiness. My filter is 6 years old.

Starting PSI is 11. Added 1/4 cup of DE and 30 min later PSI is 15 with low return jet.

Do I wait to backwash until it gets to 20 psi? Is slow filtering better? Or should I backwash now?

Backwash at 20-25% over clean pressure. "Clean" is a bit subjective, at this point, because you're dealing with algae.

You're actually filtering less because less water is returning to the pool. That's not a good thing.

Welcome! Nice to have a new face here on the forums. :)

You've added a little too much DE. You have to learn how much it takes- my 250# sand filter probably takes no more than an 1/8th to 1/4 cup max. The DE sits atop of your sand, so a short backwash/rinse should let you try again starting with maybe a heapiing tablespoon or so, depending on your filter's size? Just watch for a pressure rise of 1 point. That's your goal.
