Basketball hoop question

So I have this horrible basketball hoop that’s rusting and breaking and just looks gross. I want to replace it with a clear Dunn Rite hoop. He says you need to core a hole 6 inches from the edge. My local pool store says you can’t. My coping is 12 inches and they can’t drill into that, it’s the shell of the pool. So how does anyone install one of these? Suggestions for me? Here is what I have now.

6 inches must be their extension distance so the ball lands back in the water when you score and not bouncing away down the patio each time. Get one of the ball return things for under the hoop and you can push the whole thing back.

Yeah, just replace the the whole setup. You have a pole already, so no need to put a new hole in your deck.
You can pick up what Newdude posted, or a simple sheet of plywood under the hoop will return the ball to the pool.

what do I replace it with? I want a nice clear backboard like dunnrite offers, but I don't really want a to attract attention with a piece of plywood.

The new backboard/ hoop will either have a universal bracket to fit the old pole, or the pole will be the same size to pull the old one out and install the new one complete. He was joking about using plywood to return the ball to the pool. The hoop return I linked to is pricier but there are many other one for sale that are less. I was just showing you the idea I don’t shop it around.

I haven't seen a backboard that I can buy alone, my biggest issue is my pole is 19" from my pool. Even if I buy a backboard, you can see my pole doesn't curve, so I have this craziness strapped to it to extend it over the pool. So I'm really just looking for a good option to fix this. I'm willing to core a new hole, but I need a hoop that can be at least 12" from the edge. I'm kind of surprised the DunnRite has to be 6" that seems so close. I'd think lots of people have this problem?

Yeah I'm not sure how I'd attach that, since my pole doesn't curve over the pool. I don't know if it would work with my current setup and I really just want to get rid of the current crappy set up! Plus, would this work in a pool?

The pole and the black angle iron appear to be in good condition. I would:
1. remove the basketball backboard from the angle iron. from the pic looks like 4 bolts is holding it.
2. Go to home depot and buy some 2x6 and cut to length to fix between the angle iron and use new bolts to secure the 2x6 to the angle iron.
3. Paint angle iron and wood to help against the elements.
4. buy the goaliath backboard from the dicks website from above post.
5. mount the goaliath to the 2x6s.
done.

I was referring to buying a while new kit and only using the pieces that you need from it. Preferably you find a new one that has the same diameter pole. *if* you can pull the old one out the new one would slide right back in. (Sometimes they freeze up over time, it could be miserable to pull out). Option 2 is to reuse your pole and either find one that mounts to a similar pole in its own kit, Or create your own mounting system like EDC1911 said.

This isn't what you want, but it solves your problem (at the expense of having a big block of plastic on your deck). It really is worth the price. I have it but not in clear (wasn't available at the time). The Dunnrite model you showed is nice if you can make it work with your arrangement somehow.

This setup has a breakaway backboard which is fantastically engineered.

but right now, our hoop isn't far enough over the pool. it's way too far back.

well I'd have to get mine out to even use this. if they have to tear up my cement to remove the pole, I'm going to have another one installed.

Been following this thread because we want a basketball goal and we are getting a pool installed this fall. I just noticed Ollie’s had this goal in their ad this week. $59 and it’s over $120 on amazon and Walmart. I might pick one up

3.5 ft would be perfect for the pool and if you had a pole already you could scrap the big base.

The concern before long may be rust from the whole thing staining your deck. They are short on rust resistance. If it’s on a different surface, then not a concern.
