Balancing water - where to start?

Wow what a difference! Keep at it!

Thanks but I have to give most of the credit to the company I pay to have it opened. They make sure opening/closing is done right. I just don't have the time - but when they are done I maintain the water and pool. 5 minutes a day using the TFP method, and an hour on the weekend for brushing/backwashing/etc. They also take care of big problems should they arrive.

Oh and I have to say that the Polaris is worth every penny.

Noobie question: Does the main drain at the bottom pull in water to filter?

Usually.

It may be plumbed directly with a valve somewhere, or it could be plumbed into the bottom of the skimmer and the diverter valve adjusts flow between the two. Is there something that looks like this beneath the skimmer basket?

When I take out the skimmer basket, all I see are two holes. I guess when it's warm enough to swim I can go down there and feel if there is any suction.

The pool pump just kicked on and a bunch of brown water shot out of one of the returns, with quite a bit of air. Pump is on a timer and had been off for 5 hours or so. Any idea what would cause that? It has been raining cats and dogs so I'm shocking again.
