Baffled pump basket lid always has air bubbles

My Doheny's 3/4hp has a lid identical to the one in this Amazon listing.

The baffles always have large air bubbles in them and after growing algae in the basket over the winter this means a film is not getting cleaned out by chlorinated water. I worry this will become an algae seed.

Does anyone have an opinion about whether air bubbles here necessarily indicates a suction side leak? I was hopeful that enough run time with the lid shut would clear them out but it doesn't. This makes me unsure about whether it's getting recharged. Also by an unavoidable small amount of normal air sucking at the skimmer.

Being 3/4hp there just isn't ever a really powerful turbulent suction to clear them out. It's adequate flow for my filtration and solar purposes, but not excessive like my 1hp was.

My old Hayward 1hp did not have baffles in the lid. I may look at whether I can fit the wet side of my Haward onto this Doheny's pump with the 3/4hp impeller.

Your issue is a suction side leak. Find that leak and the bubbles and the algae will stop. There is an article in pool School that may help

There should be NO air sucking in at the skimmer......None! Your pool water level may be too low.

Did you scrub that area thoroughly with a toothbrush, bottle brush or similar?
No. I resist the idea that it would come to that. I believe does need a regular sanitation scheme that is capable of clearing out a film in regular operation.

Yes I can accept the notion that persistent air pockets necessarily indicate a suction side leak and I will investigate that further. At the same time though when I watch the basket, there just isn't ever a turbulent enough flow in those air pockets to visibly suck the air out of them. Still I feel like even if just by aeration the gas should indeed eventually be getting taken up.

Water level is within an inch of the top of the skimmer so it's good. It's just when I watch it sometimes I feel like sometimes I still see a microbubble get sucked down, maybe along with a bug or something.

Get the leak fixed and water will completely fill the pump basket and will not allow algae to grow.

Pool level should be 1/2 way up the skimmer throat...........1 inch below the top is too high.
