Bad timing for chlorine loss

I had a 3ppm overnight chlorine loss. Water is clear though. We are leaving today for 4 days. Any suggestions so we don't come home to green pool? On top of it is supposed to rain 3 of the days we will be gone. We don't have time to do the slam process and I am kind of worried to do slam process with our cya levels and don't want to bleach my liner. My chlorine was 10 ppm after the sun went down last night.

With a CYA of 80 you can raise your FC to slam level of 32ppm and that should be good for 4 days while you are gone.

The rain will reduce any UV loss which will help stretch your FC for the 4 days.

When you get back well rested from your vacay you can deal with your pool problems.

Typically if we leave I throw some " unstabilized" tablets in the pool and my 18 year old will check the skimmer and add another tablet if needed. Should I still have tablets floating in there? My 18 year will not mess with the pool beyond throwing tablets in.

I would get the pool to 32 ppm FC using liquid chlorine right before you leave.

With tablets you never know how much FC will actually be released. And I don’t like putting tablets in a skimmer.

The tablets are likely why your CYA is already on the high side. You can't get your 18 year old to pour in a prescribed amount of liquid chlorine on occasion?

Thanks. We used to use tablets all the time. (The reason for my high cya we estimate it was over 200). I am not a fan of the unstabilized tablets in my skimmer at all. They gum up the basket so they will gum up the hoses too. I hated the floater because there was always little chunks of of the tablet falling out everytime it was moved. We only use them when leaving for trips now and do liquid chlorine the rest of the time. I suspect we may have algae on our solar cover because we didn't use it for a few weeks and you can't dry them out very easily. With the temps getting into the low 60s and even the high 50s at night already we are back to using it and the pool has had very little use in the past month.

We switched to the trouble free pool methods this year. The high cya is from us using stabilized tablets for 3 years and powder shock. We estimate it was over 200ppm before doing multiple partial drains last fall and it started this season out well over 100 close to 200 before draining half the pool. These tablets don't have cya in them and our calcium levels are not a concern since we have a vinyl liner and ours is low anyway. We only use them going on vacation. The rest of the time is liquid chlorine only. My 18 year old tends to forget to check on the pool. He doesn't use it so it is low on his priority list.

I thought all tablets had CYA? What do you have that doesn't?

They are unstabilized tablets, not sure of the brand, but truthfully they are stabilized with calcium so instead of raising your cya you are raising you calcium which can be problematic as well and I have read on here that the only way to remove calcium is to do a water exchange like you would for cya. I only use them when we will not be able to manually add liquid chlorine.

We are back the water is still clear. The solar cover is still on so I can't see the full bottom, but from what I did see it just looks like dirt. I put enough liquid chlorine to reach slam levels before we left. Not sure how high it actually got. I tested after 30 mins of circulating and I think it was at 26 (I forgot to record it in the app) Today it is down to 15.5 but we did get about 2 1/2-3 inches of rain. I left the solar cover on. Should I do an overnight test again to see if I still have over night loss and to see if the full slam procedure needs to be done?

I had no over night loss this time. Both last night and this morning are at 15 ppm. I am assuming the full slam procedure is not necessary?
If you’re passing all 3 criteria there’s no need to slam.
*Crystal clear water - no algae (dead or alive)
*pass oclt
* cc 0.5 or less

Thanks. I didn't remove the solar cover yet (it was only 70* here today and I am trying to hold my 80* water) I only flipped it back to get my sample. So I will check the bottom tomorrow.
