Bad Salt Cell

Hello,
I'm somewhat new to recognizing problems with my salt generator, but I have a Hayward T Cell 15 salt cell that I believe is going bad. I'm not sure how old the cell is, but we bought the house 5 years ago, so at least that old. Lately it seems the Aquarite controller was not reading the salt levels correctly. Typically the level would increase 300ppm or so for every 40lbs bag of salt I added. Anyways, currently the controller is reading 2500ppm and a sample to Pinch a Penny just read quite a bit higher (5000ppm). I am adding water to dilute the salt, but does it sound like the cell has gone bad or could it be the controller? I have cleaned the cell with the muriatic acid mix recently and just cleaned it again yesterday.
 
You divide the reported salinity by the actual salinity. When you get 70%, time for a new cell. You have 69%.
To get a few more weeks, you can change the cell size to T9.

Be sure to reduce your actual salinity back to low 3000's. The board components in the Aquarite power center tend to fail rapidly at salinity above that level.

I ordered a replacement cell today from inyopools

Hello, so I finally got around to installing the new cell (have the salt generator in the off position) and as expected, the controller read "HI". I drained some water and added and the controller still registered "HI". I left the controller off all night and ran the pump, thinking it may take some time for the controller to read the correct salt level. Now the controller reads 700. I only drained a few inches. Any idea what might be going on?
 
Be sure the water is well mixed.
It may take some time for the controller to average out the salinity.

The high current might have burned out the thermistor.

Check the voltage and if it is dropping too low, the thermistor is likely to be bad.

Check the thermistor for cracks.
