Backwash to prevent overflow

Crazy question.... it's been pouring rain for about 12 hours now. My pool is in danger of overfilling. If I backwash to drain some off MUST I add more DE right away, or could I wait until it stops raining? What might happen if I don't? Would it make a difference if I just turned the pump off after I backwash?
TIA.

Do you have an MPV or a slide backwash valve?

You can backwash and drain water and leave the pump off until you are ready to turn the pump on and add DE to the filter.

You don;t want to run your DE filter without DE for more then 5-10 minutes. Dirt will get on the grids and the only way to clean it is to open the filter and clean it.
