Just ordered a Nautilus Plus. This cleaner allows the user to set a weekly cleaning schedule, as do a number of other robotic cleaners. The prevailing wisdom seems to be that removing the cleaner from the pool at the completion of each cycle is mandatory. My question is, if one is required to remove the cleaner, what's the point of the auto-scheduler? It would make sense if the cleaner remained in the pool between cycles, otherwise the utility of this feature is illusory. Am I missing something?

I bet its leagalese for the warranty. Just to cover their bases if they get an abused machine back or something...? Just my guess.
My robot isn't just a pickerupper... it also brushes my walls. So setting it up to run 3 times a week might not fill the basket at all but it brushed my walls which is always a good thing.
Mine also stays in the pool for extended periods. If we notice we've got leaves or debris we'll pull it out and empty the basket about weekly. My basket holds a LOT so it isn't necessary to do each time.

I think most robot manuals say to take the robot out at the end its cycle... just a cover their rear...
I have two older Dolphins that must be 15 years old at a couple of rent houses. I bought them used.. In the winter they stay submerged except for the time it takes me to clean them once a week or so.. In the summer they are in and out of the pool more frequently... The only problem is that the longer you leave them in the pool, the lighter the plastic colors will become.. Other than that I have seen zero issues due to leaving them in the water.
At my pool, I have a newer Dolphin and in the summer it comes out every day just because I don't like looking at it... In the winter, not so much..

Whenever I sell a robot and mention the weekly timer, I call it "vacation mode". If you're going away for a week you can leave it in the pool and have the power supply kick on every couple days. I never advise leaving the robot in the pool because I can never guarantee anybody's day to day water chemistry. Because I know the second I tell someone they can leave the robot in the pool for the whole summer it's going to be the guy who keeps his pH at a consistent 6.2 and has never even heard of alkalinity, or it's the guy tho keeps his chlorine at 10ppm because he "likes the smell" (yes, these are two actual situations I've had in my store).
Granted I'm sure the average TFP member is much better about their water chemistry I still don't advise it if you want to get the maximum life out of your machine. There are 3 main gaskets/o-rings to worry about becoming prone to leakage on any Dolphin and the longer they are exposed to water, the more of a a chance they have of breaking down. I can tell instantly in my shop when someone leaves their robot in the pool, and they always have more issues.

It all sort of depends. It's good practice to clean the gunk that's has been collected after each cycle to maintain peak performance, so once it's out for cleaning then it's not much hassle to put away. On teh other hand, if you have no issue with leaving it in dirty, then you should also be fine.
