Ascorbic Acid Treatment Questions

Hi,

I am in the middle of doing the AA treatment after reading instructions from this site and just have a few questions.

Have just added 1L of metal solution for 48000L pool, says need 500ml but added double.
1. Do I have to wait a full 24h before slowly adding chlorine? Can I start like after 12h?
2. Should I get extra metal solution in case I have not added enough or stains start to reappear? Did add 1L instead of 500ml or should that be more than enough?
3. Do you need more sequestrant if you use more ascorbic acid, think I might have added too much ascorbic acid.
4. Why is it suggested to use liquid chlorine? I have a SWG can I just not start the chlorine production with that? If I need to use liquid chlorine, what quantity? If I use SWG how high output, on full and just monitor levels of chlorine and keep low?

Any help appreciated, thanks

Decided to get the liquid chlorine.

Main question, when can I start adding chlorine?

I last added ascorbic acid over 24 hours ago. But Sequestrant has only been added 6 hours ago, do I need to wait 24 hours for sequestrant before I start adding chlorine.

Main question, when can I start adding chlorine?
As soon as you are satisfied with the stain removal, and assuming you are not exchanging water, then add the sequestrant first. Next adjust the pH/TA as necessary, but keep the pH on the low end around 7.2 if possible. From there, it's time to start adding chlorine back slow.ly. Monitor the FC level closely as residual AA can remove the chlorine. Once the chlorine starts to hold, go slowly and monitor for stains trying to return.

Thanks so much.

Just started chlorine addition after 24 hours of sequestrant. Have set SWG to 3/4 production and added 2L liquid chlorine, will monitor hourly.

PH is very low, 6.8 or possibly less, is it vital I raise this or can I let it increase on its own. Usually my PH increases and stays around 7.8/8.0.

Thanks

So slowly getting FC to rise, now at 2.6 but TC is at 6.4.
As stated in the article, it can take a lot of chlorine to slowly transition back to normal. It's removing a lot of AA product which explains why your CC level is so high. Do your best to slowly increase the FC and those numbers should flip soon.

At this stage things are looking good, hopefully I have been successful and stains will not return.

Does anyone have an idea of what HEDP sequestrants are available in Australia for future use/maintenance.

Many thanks

Good point, I’m not sure as I’ve never needed them. Google and the SDS’s would be my friend.

The AU market if full of all sorts of stain treatment products, all concoctions of various acids that you don’t want in a pool.

Citric acid. Sulfumic acid. Oxalic acid. Polybasic organic acids. Ethlanediolic acid.

Ethanediolic acid is just another name for oxalic acid and “poly basic” organic acids are just organic molecules that have more than one acidic proton to exchange (like poly acrylic acid). None of those acids listed are great for pool water unless you plan to use them and then drain the pool. Sulfamic acid and it’s very problematic because the sulfamate stays in the water for a very long time while reacting with chlorine to form a weak sanitizer called N-chlorosulfamate. The citric and oxalic acids will work similar to ascorbic acid and produce the same result although it can take longer to re-establish FC levels. Oxalic is isn’t great to use because it will react with calcium hardness and form needle-like calcium oxalate crystals if the CH is high.

Thanks so much for the info. I have already unfortunately used an oxalic acid stain remover (Sulfumic acid. Oxalic acid. Polybasic organic acids) and then metal solution which did the job and now just trying to get the FC levels right. Seems to be going ok and chlorine seems to be holding a bit better now. Advice on alternatives for the future would be greatly appreciated.

Just looking for some further advice.
I completed the process and starting the chlorine addition via liquid chlorine and SWG last Tuesday the 18th June. Initially battled to get chlorine to hold and CC (6.4) was much higher than FC (2.6) but that has now settled and CC reading as 0. Did use 2kg of oxalic acid stain remover and 1L metal remover sequestrant.

Done an OCLT and all good, basically no drop.

Pool size +- 48000L
PH 7.6
TA 70
CYA 50
FC 5
Temp +- 15 degrees Celsius

Issue I am having is pool is still cloudy.

I have cleaned the filter cartridge almost on a daily basis and also gave it an overnight soak which cleaned it up really well, cartridge seems very clean now but is 2.5yrs old.
Running filter 24/7 and in the morning pool is looking clear. However when I brush walls/floors I see a substance coming off the surface and clouding the pool. This seems to be happening less now but still a bit cloudy although I can see pool floor. Would have thought the cloudiness would have resolved in a week.

What I was wondering is that should I just be patient and leave for a few weeks? No one is swimming as winter. Happy to do this just not sure if could be other issues.
Only thing that slightly concerns me is that I have the SWG set at 5 running for 8 Hours whereas before I started this treatment I was able to set SWG to 2 for 8 Hours and it coped fine.

Any advice will be helpful, but happy to be patient and see if this resolves in a few days/weeks.

I would think so Paul, but I see Steve has been coaching you along the process, so let's make sure he doesn't have any other recommendations for you based on that recent treatment.
