I currently have the AS system. I'm over the expense and the fact the a bac pack has to be replaced every 7-10 days. Am I able to use liquid chlorine and old school balancing without changing my whole system?

Mineral systems are not recommended by tfp. In fact, they are specifically recommended NOT to use.

Just stop using it. You can leave it connected or remove it. Most of those units dump their minerals as soon as they are connected.
Your basic options are to manually chlorinate using liquid chlorine or convert to a saltwater pool. Typically you can get liquid chlorine at big box stores in concentrations of 10-12%. During open season you'll be adding chlorine every day or so.
Alternatively, you could convert your pool to saltwater and get a saltwater chlorine generator (SWG). SWGs create the chlorine for your pool by splitting salt into its elemental parts - Chlorine and Hydrogen. Saltwater pools require a lot less chlorine maintenance. BTW: Saltwater pools run at around 2-3 parts per thousand. The ocean is 35 parts per thousand. Most cannot even taste the salt in the water. That is what I use. That will run you probably a couple thousand.
You may also use chlorine "pucks" however they add cyanuric acid (CYA) to your pool with each use. Eventually your CYA level will be unmanageable leading to water drain and refill. They are recommended to use sparingly and not as your main source of chlorine. Like when you go on vacation.
Biggest thing for whatever method you choose to chlorinate is to keep the proper chlorine to CYA level.
