Hello, I'm new here. I just joined so I can try and get some help on heating my spa. Its ran from an aqualink rs4. The spa will not heat and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. It may have been a while since it was ran but all the lights are coming on . Any advice ?

We need more information about the pool equipment you have. Please complete your signature after reading this page --> Pool School - Read This BEFORE You Post

Some pics of your pool equipment and valves and heater may also help us understand your situation.

Have you looked at your heater to confirm the proper lights are on?

No. I'm staying at a friends house so I dont know the specs of the pool. I know it's an aqualink rs4 and one of the control panels is in the laundry room. The jets are working but it hasn't been heating. The red lights are on. Where would I look at the heater or what exactly am I looking for? I can see all the equipment on the side of the house

I can't tell you where to look on the heater without knowing the make and model of the heater.

That looks like a Rheem Heat Pump. Manual is here --> http://cdn.globalimageserver.com/fetchdocument-rh.aspx?name=classic-heat-pump-pool-heaters-pool-spa-installation-manual

It looks like it is on. Lower green light indicates it is in SPA mode. Water temp is 89.5. Check what the heater temp is set to.

From page 12 of the manual:

To Select Pool or Spa Mode
To have access to either one of these programs, press
the SET key until you see P _S and by pressing the
UP or DOWN key you can switch to POL or SPA.

To Increase the Desired Water Temperature (Pool or Spa Mode)
Push the SET key until you see POL or SPA. The programmed
temperature will be displayed. Press the UP
arrow to increase the temperature setting one degree
at a time.

From Page 14:

A. UNIT IS RUNNING, BUT NOT HEATING

• Is water flow through the unit adequate? Check
the unit for obstructions, such as a clogged filter
pump strainer, a dirty filter, or valves not positioned
correctly.
• Is the ejected air from the unit 8°–10°F cooler than
incoming air? If so, the unit is extracting heat from
the air and transferring it to the pool.
• Is water condensing on the evaporator and internal
copper pipes? This is also evidence of heat
removal from the air. When the air is cool with low
humidity, condensation may not be evident.
• How long has the unit been operating? During initial
pool heating in cold weather, it may require a
week to elevate the water temperature to a comfortable
level. Normally, it takes about 4 days.
How many hours per day is the unit operating?

Remember that the heat pump pool heater only
operates while the pool pump is running. Set the
time clock to permit 24 hour per day operation. After
the desired temperature is reached, return the unit to
normal operation of 8–10 hours per day.

It's set on the aqualink to 102. So I can manually set it on the actual heater itself ? I know the owner was just out here and a pool person comes once a week perhaps i could ask him. I'm willing to figure it out because i really want to use it. I'm scared to break it though

Does your Aqualink control panel show a spa temperature?

Heat pumps are slow to heat. Especially at night.

Are you sure it is not on and heating the water a little?

Is the fan on top of the heater running and can you feel colder air coming out of the top?

I've been trying to since yesterday. I've been here before and never had this problem. The water temp has been on 89 since we got here , which is a bit hotter than the pool. I know that the time isnt correct on the aqualink but it's set from 7am to 9pm to heat and it's on like 5pm right now. I will check in the morning to see if the fan is blowing air. I know its definitely on.

Would I be able to physically set the temperature from the actual heater or is that for something else ?

Best if you ask the owner or the pool person. There are different ways the heater controls could be hooked up.

Make sure the temp on the heater is set to it's highest temp. Just like a gas heater, you set it to 104 and then the Aqualink controls the on off and you can set the temp on the Aqualink up to 104. But if the temp on the heater is set to 89 and you tell the Aqualink to heat to say 100, the heater will override the Aqualink and shut off at the temp it is set for.

I can see by the pic that the return side actuator is sending water to the spa. Does this spa have a spillway that sends water through it to the pool? Are you still getting the water spilling (to the pool) when you have the spa on and trying to heat?

As someone else has suggested, heat pumps don't work as well at night. Have you tried to heat up the spa during the day?
