Another Newb to Pool Care

Eye protection is a must, you don't need gloves. If you get any on your hands, just dip them in the pool. If you get any in the gloves, the MA will stay in contact with your skin until you can get them off.

Lower the jug so that it sits in the water to support the weight and pour slowly.

After all the reading on this site, I decided that was easiest. I lowered the bottle into the pool and poured into the deep end slowly. I just guessed at about 32 oz.

If you squeeze the sock with the CYA, you can get that whole sock contents dissolved in about 45 mins. Just let the sock sit in the water for about 1/2 hour first. I drape it over the pool pole sothat it’s dangling in front of a return so it’s not touching the vinyl. Skimmer will work, but best to not let it sit there for too long. Squeeze it.

The CYA will also lower your pH some. Maybe finish dissolving your CYA and testing pH again before the muriatic acid.

I calc that the 2400 g of CYA plus 32 oz of MA will lower your pH 0.8. Should be ok if you’ve already added all, but best to test pH before adding the MA if you haven’t yet.

The pole idea is great. Thank you for that. It sat in my skimmer basket all night with the pump running and is finally almost dissolved. I need to add another 1200 g or so to get it up to 30 so I'll start a second sock soon.

I had the same calculations. pH this morning was 8.2. I've already added the muriatic acid. I'l going to check the pH and do another round of tests shortly.

Updated all numbers this afternoon at 3:46 pm (link in my profile shows times off by 6-hours)
FC: 6.0
CC: 0.5
pH 7.5
TA 100
CH 200
CYA <30 (but indicating now with some cloudiness)
Salt 3000
So far I've added just about 4 pounds of dry stabilizer. I have just a little left in socks in each skimmer basket. I'm pretty sure I need about another 32 oz to get well over the 30 ppm mark for that. Planning to check pool in morning and go from there.

Update for tracking...still watching CYA come slowly as expected. I'm not at 30 ppm but getting closer. Thus far I've added a total of 6 pounds of CYA to my water which was reading zero when I started. I'm still dissolving the last dose of CYA.
FC 7.5 ppm
CC 0.5 ppm
pH 7.6
TA 100 ppm
CH 250 ppm
CYA < 30 ppm
No questions at this time. Once I get a solid CYA reading, I'll proceed with an OCLT and work go from there.

If this is now better categorized in a different forum, I understand. For continuity, I'm continuing here.

Today's measurements after adding some well water yesterday.

FC 9.5 ppm
CC 0.0 ppm
pH 8.4 (off scale estimate)
TA 100 ppm
CH 200 ppm
CYA < 30 ppm (but getting closer)
Salt 3000 ppm

SWG still set to 80% and pump running 12-hours per day. Planning to add 3 more pounds CYA today (but looking at charts, I probably need closer to 5 more pounds. I am also planning to return pump and SWG to 10-hours and 75%.

I'm a noob too but looks like your numbers are good! As stated your CYA will continue to rise and the MA will knock the pH down immediately. I've also learned that the time of day you check pH can make a difference.

Your numbers look good, other than pH. MA to lower. Did you do the OCLT?
Thanks Deb. No OCLT yet. Is it necessary? I thought I read OCLT only really necessary if CC is rising above 0.5 or 1.0f ppm, but I am sure I missed something in that article. I'll read up on it and do that this week.

I’d suggest it since you had some visible algae very recently.

CC 0.5 (barely)

TA 100
CH 175
CYA 30
Salt 2800
Planning to add 1/2 gallon muriatic acid (20 Be; remainder of 1-gallon jug) to pool and expecting it to drop me close to 7.2. I"m going to brush the pool today and vacuum tomorrow. I'm waiting to see if CYA rises much more before I add another 1-2 pounds of stabilizer. Also planning to dial back pumps to 10-hours and SWG to 75% (previous setting). I have not done an OCLT yet, we keep expecting rain at night. I'll probably try and do one this weekend.

Your FC is over 10, which gives artificially high pH test results. Don’t add MA based on pH measured above 10.
Thanks Deb. Too late, but my pH has been running 7.8 or higher for a while now. Hopefully all is well. I'll dial back my SWG now as well.

FC 12.5 (up from last reading two days ago)
CC 0.5 (barely)
pH 7.8
TA 100
CH 175
CYA 40
Salt 3000 (controller reads 2900)
Currently SWG running at 75% and pump running 11-hours per day. Should I set SWG to something lower to ease FC back down? We had rain over the weekend and I topped the pool with well water so I honestly expected it to go down.

Yes, adjust your SWCG and run time to maintain the target FC. If FC is climbing, then set it lower.
